Well,
Here's the latest..
This is my Nashville Delux Power Telecaster into the TLSE using the Plexi model with the h30 cab sim and the Tube Screamer model straight into the board with a hint of delay added in the mix. The bass in an elcheapo 5 string someone left here maybe a year ago going through the TLSE with the mesa recto model and the 4x10 cab sim...LM9 VSTI on those drums...me singing. This is just a demo so my band mates can learn the song. Lemme know what you think!

Shawn, I'm hoping you want a
Wed, 2006/11/29 - 12:55am — hamfistShawn, I'm hoping you want a critique of this recording, because that's what I'm gonna do.
Firstly, Nice song. I like ! Where you bring the whole song down in the middle, works very well too. You have a really good voice, very well suited to this style of music. I think you've recorded the voice(s) just fine.
The guitar sound is , to me, rather thin and maybe even fizzy. Just lacking some body (mids , really). THis may of course be exactly the tone you want, which is fine. However, to my taste, I would like a thicker, gutsier ("midsier") tone. Am I right, that there is only one main guitar track there ? Maybe layering that tone, with another midsier tone (maybe from the AC30) would give it more body.
I would also like to see more variety of guitar tone, to add impact and signal changes into different sections of the song.
Drums - seems like you've got the hang of basic MIDI drum programming. BUT, hi hat is much too loud compared to bass drum and snare. Bring the HH down, and the bass & snare up (a bit). It would also have been nice to have more variety with the cymbals. maybe going onto ride for the "I ...I..I. I want to see you" bit. Also some Crashes in there to add interest. Come on mate, it wouldn't take long !
Bass guitar - sounds fine to me. Another thing the TLSE seems to do well.
I know you have produced this basically as a demo, therefore, many of my criticisms are only relevant if you want it to be a finished final recording. In general, its a great shot, Shawn. Well done. Another hour or so of tweaking and I reckon you could improve it significantly.
Hope this is acceptable crtique. I'm afraid, I usually end up being rather blunt, but hopefully it might be useful.
I really must get round to doing some more recording myself. I've had a bad throat for about 6 weeks now. I'm waiting for it to improve before I can really do vocals again. I'm supposed to be leading at church on sunday. I just pray that my throat is going to be up to it ! Ah well, that's all fit for another thread.
God bless, Alan

Wed, 2006/11/29 - 6:31am — MBWNice.
I especially liked the slight change of dynamic in the guitar part between 2:50 mins and 2:10 mins.
What is going on there exactly?
Is it the exact same patch with the volume on the guitar tuned down a tad, or...?
Good work

Wed, 2006/11/29 - 9:25am — eyema_believerYay!!! Thanks guys!
lets see
Alan....Thanks for the critique!....this is totally a demo, if it weren't I would do things a lot differently, for sure. I used to be good at programing the drum beats, but now that I have a "pro level" sequencer I totally never even figured out how to even cut and paste midi in this new improved app until last night. I don't particularly like the way it works either...anyways...yep...it's only one guitar... lots of high end...a lil too much really thanks to my BBE Sonic Maximizer plugin which I dearly love, but can get too much in a hurry. Although if you listen closely at certain times when the vocals stop you can hear what sounds like an acoustic...that was my vocal mic picking up the strings on Tele, as I was singing and recording the guitar part at the same time...hee hee
OK
Chris....i like your questions!
First....yep...just the volume knob and my fingers instead of a pick.
Lemme dust off my cyber-bible
Psalm 145:21
My mouth shall speak the praise of the LORD,
And all flesh shall bless His holy name
Forever and ever.
Psalm 103:1 BLESS the LORD, O my soul;
And all that is within me, bless His holy name!
Psalm 145:1 A psalm of praise of David. I will praise you, my God and King, and bless your name forever and ever.
and my fav Psalm 100:4 Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, And into His courts with praise.
Be thankful to Him, and bless His name!
Out of the Hebrew, the original word there is "BARAK", and here is the definition and outline of biblical usage:
1) to bless, kneel
a) (Qal)
1) to kneel
2) to bless
b) (Niphal) to be blessed, bless oneself
c) (Piel) to bless
d) (Pual) to be blessed, be adored
e) (Hiphil) to cause to kneel
f) (Hithpael) to bless oneself
2) (TWOT) to praise, salute, curse
Thanks Johan!
Peace!

Wed, 2006/11/29 - 10:02am — hamfistYup, I've always struggled a little bit with the concept of us blessing Him. Sure, He blesses us , all the time. But, us blessing Him, ???? I hope He finds my meagre efforts to be a blessing on His heart.

Wed, 2006/11/29 - 8:02pm — mp2oldShawn, I finally got to listen to your demo. WOW, what a great start. I really like the way it drives you, but still leaves you wanting more. I can really see the congregation getting involved. It may be a little long, but the structure is there. I would probably cut it to around 4 min. max. I feel we don't write enough "corporate" worship songs. Too much about "me" in todays songs. I like that this song is your cry to Him, but anyone can relate. I would back off the distortion a little to let your good choice in cord voicings ring out. I for one would like to have that patch to tinker with.
Good work & keep on a' praisin' brotha!!!!

Thu, 2006/11/30 - 9:03am — eyema_believerThanks Mp2old,
Most of my life I’ve been busy out entertaining people promoting myself and satan’s plan to keep people under his thumb. When Jesus called me into His service, He dealt with me severely and gave me a mandate, and that is simply this… To lead His people in worship. So when I write, that is my primary focus…period. The moment I'm happiest is when I get an email from someone that says "thanks for helping me see Jesus today..."

Double the bridge after the first chorus or at the end.
I'd approach the guitar much as early VH or solo Hagar.
Do big multi-voiced chorus.
I even hear a soulful female voice free-stlyling behind the latter choruses.
Can I guest solo??
Love what you have so far!!

Fri, 2006/12/01 - 1:29am — hamfistShawn, its a great idea. I don't know exactly how we could pull it off. It would be easy if we all used the same DAW (Come to think of it, you use Cubasis VST 5.0 don't you Shawn, that would probably use the same same song file format as my Cubasis VST 4.0).
I've downloaded the mp3 of your song from this site. Shawn, try sending me the MIDI file of the drum track, although, being me, I'd probably start from scratch.
Rafael, are you up for this ?
Shawn, I think you would have to mix it all. We could just send you wav files of any guitars. Actually, I would also have to send you a wav file of the drums, as you don't have my drums VST instrument.
SHawn, are you keeping the song structure the same ?
Alan
PS. DO you really want to do this, it could get complicated.
PPS. 95 bpm, right ?
PPPS. Shawn, can you send me, or host, an mp3 of the song, without the drums

In answer to your question
Fri, 2006/12/01 - 6:16am — eyema_believerIn answer to your question about do I really want to do this, the answer is a big fat yes! I don't think it will be complicated at all. 2 things we all will have to be conscious of, and that's it...make really really sure you start your recording on the 1 of some bar so it will be easy to line up (any bar will do really), and we will need to export stuff as .WAVs or MIDIs. Every DAW on the planet can import that stuff. Actually Alan, even the drums, I would want them back as a MIDI, unless you would take the time to export each drum as a separate .WAV so I could mix and EQ them separately. Yep, the song is 95 BPM. As far as song structure, right now it goes. VERSE, CHORUS, 1/2 VERSE, CHORUS x2, BRIDGE X6 (2 without vocals, 4 with), CHORUS X2 then vamps out. I'd like to trim a bit and have it be V, C, 1/2 V, C, Bx4, Cx2... I will try and get to the studio before work so I can send the MIDI.... other food for thought.... we could use a real live drummer, but I wouldn't have a chance to record one until next weekend...but I'm fine with your programming Alan if you're up to it! I would like to stay with the groove I got going and add some fills and accents.
somebody talk to me.

I've been at work in the studio a bit tonight, putting Alan's sweet guitar riffs with his sweet drums. (although I just realized I left one bit off the end)
This is just a prelim mix...lots and lots left to do. some of those things include.
1. Redo my guitar and bass parts
2. Vocals.
3. mix...automation etc...
4. try different drum samples.
5. Get the Chico man here to lay some sweet leads on it!
6. Sell it and make Broc a rich man.
