Tube comparison samples

hamfist's picture

Well chaps, Here it is finally, some tube comparison samples. Please be aware this is not a critique of my patches (which are "live" patches for playing through a guitar cab, not tweaked for direct recording), or my playing ability. I have taken, all effects, reverb etc off the sounds to help keep the raw sound, to aid comparison. And, yes, I know the high gain patch is absolutely horrible (I promise you it sounds OK through my cab).
I have compared 4 tubes, the original EH tube, a used 1958 Mullard ECC83 (12AX7), A NOS "60's" Mullard 12AT7, and a used Brimar 12AT7.
I have recorded 3 different tones for each tube, using exactly the same 3 TLSE patches, the same guitar, and hopefully, the same phrasing. Hopefully this website will be able to host all of the clips. I'll try and get as many as I can on.
I was suprised that both the 12AT7 tubes gave a very noticeable increase in volume (not gain) compared to the standard tube. Suprisingly also was the fact that the two 12AT7 tubes were virtually indistinguishable from the two 12AX7's in terms of gain even though the 12AT7 is supposedly 70% of the gain of a 12AX7. The Mullard ECC83 was noticeably quieter than the standard tube (this tube has supposedly tested very well but may, in fact, be fairly well used). You will, however, notice no difference in volume between the samples as they have been normalised (the ONLY post-processing done).
I haven't really formed any opinions at all yet about them myself. I haven't yet even listened to them, except through headphones.
For each sample, "cr" means crunch, "locr" means low crunch, "cl" means clean and "HG" means high gain.
The tubes are coded at the moment (tubes A-D). I shall reveal the code soon.
Gentlemen, opinions please.

Good job Hamfist, Sometimes

Good job Hamfist,

Sometimes is dificult to decide but i prefer the crunch sound of the "6 tube B cr.mp3" (the original EH tube?), but i prefer the clean sound of the "15 tube C cl.mp3" (the Mullard 12AT7?), and finally i choose the "2 tube A HG.mp3" (Brimar 12AT7?)to high gain. So for distintive sounds, diferent tubes...
To high gain i like the "18 tube D HG.mp3" (Mullard 12AX7?) too.

Thanks for making the

Thanks for making the effort!
Very well done. Your tube comparisons ( especially for the clean settings) confirmed some perspectives that I thought I have heard. Since tube tone is really subjective to playing style & preference, it will be interesting to read future comments!

I also originally made clips

I also originally made clips of each tube with a different slightly lower crunch tone. After further listening to all the other clips through my studio monitors, I think these new clips (I called them "locr" - low crunch) actually, maybe ?, show slightly more of a difference than the others. I've now added them to the original samples
I'll be honest, I'm struggling to hear much of a difference at all between the other clips. Its very difficult comparing unless you can hear one clip absolutely straight after another.
Of these new "locr" clips I have a definate favourite, which gives a richness in the final three chords, that the others don't seem to have (can anyone identify which clip it is ?). I'm still keeping quiet for the moment about which tube is which.
Anyway, less of my yackin', let's boogie. HF

Have now replaced the "cl"

Have now replaced the "cl" clips with some which don't clip quite as much as the originals. I think my .wav to mp3 conversion system is not great. I have to admit the wav files I recorded them as, sound much nicer. HF

first as I sit here listing

first as I sit here listing to each one I find it very hard to tell any difference on the clean sounds one may sound a VERY SLIGHT bit warmer or brighter but then I go through them again and cant tell much difference, I could switch my "final decision" around and it could be right.

TubeA cl = brighter
TubeB cl = warm
TubeC cl = warmer
TubeD cl = bright/warm

TubeA cr = higher bright gain
TubeB cr = warm bright
TubeC cr = warm
TubeD cr = deep warm gain

now on the gain patches they to me sound to close to comment. its really tuff for me at least to tell a difference on ALL patches, and if this is all the difference they sound from one another then to me its not worth the change. I may comment again later after I read what everyone else has said... I didnt want my opinion to be infuenced by another post.

TubeA locr = to close to comment
TubeB locr = to close to comment
TubeC locr = to close to comment
TubeD locr = to close to comment

Bri HG = to close to comment
TubeB HG = to close to comment
TubeC HG = to close to comment
TubeD HG = to close to comment

ok... quit twisting my arm

ok... quit twisting my arm and I'll take a stab at guessing which locr clip you might be hoping we'll guess... first of all I used audicity to cut each one of the four where you said "especially where the chords are" and put them back to back so I could give them a quick close listen and I think you might be liking the C clip the most. If you would like me to upload the back to back clip I will... just let me know.

I also had the same thoughts on some of the other clips... where they got to the chords they had a more definitive sound but hard to tell still, I found myself waiting for the chord parts to focus in more, now maybe there is that "holy grail" tube someone swears by is "the best" that we can compare only with the stock tube and focus on the difference but again I must say... no matter what (badfinger) tube I've heard in this example the TLSE sounds great.

Well, thanks for listening

Well, thanks for listening to my efforts everyone. They probably weren't the best comparison samples in the world. In fact I found it difficult to decide which riffs and tones would be best for a comparison trial.
Anyway, I think the time has come to release the "code".

Tube A = Brimar 12AT7
Tube B = Original EH 12AX7
Tube C = Mullard 12AT7
Tube D = Mullard 12AX7

VOXDU, you truly are a genius. I cannot believe that you got all four correctly identified. Personally, like mself61, I could hear very little difference between virtually all of the clips. I think the original EH tube held up very well in the test, but maybe it was just that I had a "good 'un".
I was very happy with the sound of my TLSE beforehand and I was really only tone-tinkering. I've ended up sticking the Brimar 12AT7 in as my new TLSE tube. It was just, and only just, my favourite. I shall be more than happy to put the EH tube back in if the Brimar dies.
mself61, If you could upload the back-to-back "chords"part of the locr clips, please feel free. I would certainly like to listen to it. I feel that listening to the same riff back-to-back really does make it much easier to make a comparison. Personally, by the time I've loaded a new mp3 sample and clicked "play", my brain has pretty much forgotton what the previous sample sounded like.
Peace to you all, HF

I'm thinking of swapping out

I'm thinking of swapping out the tube in my TLSE, just thought i'd try and 'revive' this thread. So if any of you have any further opinions, experiences or clips please do share your wisdom.
Anyone have any experience with JJ EC83S or JJ EC803S as mentioned in another thread?
Thanks guys.

Will C's picture

That's funny because I just

That's funny because I just put a JJ ECC83s (12AX7) in two weeks ago out of curiosity. It's also ironic that I already had two Electro Harmonix 12AX7's laying around here; the same type that I took out of my TLSE.

I think the JJ does make it sound better. I can hear a difference in the low and high end of the spectrum mostly. The lows aren't as flabby sounding and the high's are extended and richer sounding. I can pull pinch harmonics off way easier than before if you're into that. If you change your tube, learn how to calibrate it. You may even try that with the stock tube. When I did initially, I found I was slightly out.

I purchased a full JJ re-tube kit for my Mesa a couple years ago. I actually kept two of the stock Mesa tubes in my preamp to flatten the highs a little. The mix of tubes I have smoothes out the distortion a little and I like the results I'm getting.

Hope that helps
Will

I've forgotten what tube I

I've forgotten what tube I bought, but can't wait till I get my place where I'll have ROOM, Still looking for a job first though, the whole outcome of this thread came to an end when some of us decided that the tube change doesn't make a big difference, and may only really effect those that are audiophiles for studio work and maybe some live play, but I also think by word of mouth that some tubes eliminate some digital harshness, other than that it came down to what type of music you play, hardcore takes a different tube than a jazz player for example, so I figure with my TL I'll be doing clean tones and jump on my G9 for the metal.

Hey Monte; Did you move from

Hey Monte;
Did you move from So Cal?

mself61's picture

yep.... so cal (Torrance) I

yep.... so cal (Torrance)
I and my family has gone through some hard times, My stepson was drinking on march 15th and getting out of hand so we (his mom and I) were telling him to cool it, he kept bringing up past with his father and really getting mad about it, we told him to cool down or he'd have to leave. (we were giving him a chance to get on his feet after turning himself in and getting out of prison for selling over 4 years after living in TX (running from CA))
anyway, he decided to call 911 to report a suicide (his own) so I had to try and stop him from doing this stupid act and try and talk him out of it, he grabbed a steak knife off the kitchen sink and was threatening himself with it and I had him put it down, right then the PD showed up and he grabbed it back up, so I started in again but the PD came in and had there tasers so I figured they will get control of him and take him in so I stepped aside then they told me to get out and my daughter (his mom was already out). unfortunately after 5 tasers they felt it necessary to shoot 14 shoots and kill him in my mobile home kitchen hitting him once in the head and twice in the chest and several more lower shots, three went through my mobile (2 hitting my car, one of those went into the frame so they had ripped open the rocker panel to retrieve a bullet after impounding it then HID it by replacing the plastic rocker panel cover and didn't tell me about it). I measured the highest hole at 24", there were 7 holes in a cabinet door under the sink. the way it looks is that he was on the ground laying against the cabinet when he was shoot, the PD are claiming he lunged at them. anyway to make a long story even longer, we could not stay there, I had to try and sell my mobile while my mom will be helping me get a house after I get a Job here in my old stomping grounds in Stockton Ca., the space rent on my mobile started at 375 a month, (every year they raised the rent) and I received notice in feb. that it was going up 50 from 590 to be 640 may 1st. I moved there in 99, anyway I accidentally received our neighbors rent statement who only lived there 3/4 months and theres was only 395 (I didn't see that it wasn't mine till I saw that then had to look at the name on the bill), anyway... I was telling people 12k, then 10k, put it on craigslist for 5k, told a few 3k and 2k a few days before we had to make the move, Had one girl that wanted it, I let them in on everything it needed, it was not in good condition, (not just from the PD but from roots in the parks lines clogging up and flooding my bathroom many times), anyway... Henry (the reason I wrote Die Henry Die 3 or 4 years ago) the park manager was telling this chick that the rent was going to be 750, I had another girl wanting to buy it for 1000, he told her the rent would be 720...
I'm really thinking about reviving the song just so he might try and sue me because its got his voice on it calling me names and threatening me. I'm really a peaceful guy and don't wish death on anyone but it was my feeling of anger from how he treated me and others in the park including some women who couldn't pay there rent so he'd ask them to do him a "favor".
anyway... enough of that I'll leave it behind and not bother with his wonderful KARMA,
Latest news, My stepsons father hung himself Friday night due to the events with his son cause he couldn't take it, even though he was mostly the cause of his son's troubles it still doesn't make things right, so now the Torrance PD have killed 2 birds in the matter of 2 seconds.
My ol'lady (stepsons mom) lost her mother in feb. her brother 1 1/2 years ago, her son, now her x, I'm wondering if it's gonna stop now or what.
I had to ask myself "What kind of life have I got" and where am I supposed to go ?, I try and listen to where God wants me and just go, but I think I may have missed my calling when Sanyo offered me a job in Chicago.

Well wish me luck and pray for a job for me.
I'll write another book in a few years...
Take care and don't trust the PD

Monte, You and your family

Monte,
You and your family will be in my prayers. It is difficult to see what God had intended for us in times like these. I don't have any answers for you. Just wanted to let you know you will be in my thoughts.

Life is full of trials and pain.
I will be praying that you'll find work.
I know you will, you are a smart and
passionate man, who has fallen onto
tough times. Humbly I suggest you
read the book of Job in the Old Testament,
you will be able to relate to the story.
You'll be encouraged.
Thanks for being honest and letting

Thanks to the threads on

Thanks to the threads on this website, I've experimented with a lot of different tubes on the spectrum and brands. I found the best preamp tube for my application is a USA GE/Tung-Sol 5965 (military spec version of a 12AV7). I play in a CCM/Worship Rock band each Sunday through the house PA. My set up consists of two Boss GE-7s (insert and after TLSE), TLSE and an Anderson Crowdster Plus.

Monte First and foremost I

Monte

First and foremost I am so, so, so sorry for you. I'm not a believer at all so I'm not going to offer sympathy by saying there is some grand plan going on here - its extremely brutal and nasty.

Seond - Fuckin' hell - that's a way lot more than tough, what you are going is the pits of despair. Make sure you and your family seek professional counselling help - for the sake of your partner, your daughter and yourself.

Thirdly - I'm completely outraged at the Police!. Their actions are so far outside the norms/training for police and their associated guidelines/behaviour that I would recommend that it be taken up further. Contact the civil liberties union and other associated Police watchdog agencies and formally lodge a complaint. Its not going to bring back your stepson, its not going to ease your pain or the pain of your partner, its not going to bring back his dad (even if he wasn't great) but it may have an impact on future police behaviour.

Thanks all and Kieren, I

Thanks all and Kieren, I know its not the right place to blow off steam, We do have an attorney that has taken the case. he thinks he can win it and your totally right that it won't bring him back and the main reason is to hopefully reach the training of how they should handle things. I have always been strong mentally in this topic of death, even family, I know it's coming for all at one point or another so I have learned from a young age that we must except it even though I was'nt seeing close family passing then. We all love someone and the more we do the harder it is for us to not except that they are not here with us anymore, if you don't believe thats ok, but I believe that we all as a "life form" are connected in spirit and will always be a part of "God".
