The tonelab is great for many sounds..but not metal. For those of us that want the extra push over the edge, try combining it with the Guitar Rig plugin. (Guitar rig sounds a bit too fuzzy on its own). Sure it's a bit more money to expend but when you want a heavy sound and need to record direct so as not to wake the spouse try this. The tonelab patch is one I found called vanhalen. Check out the short sample I included. Don't worry about the slight background noise..it's a bug inherent in my system.

And what did you do at this
Sat, 2006/04/15 - 2:15am — Freak_oOAnd what did you do at this patch...what did you add before TLSE...and can you please tell me what reverb did you use and what are the parameters of it...thx bye
Here's the vanhalen tonelab
Sun, 2006/04/16 - 6:28am — otisdeezerHere's the vanhalen tonelab patch. If you use guitar rig as well, I've included my bank file. The preset in the bank file is called heavy. I use Sonar to record and use guitar rig as an effects plugin. I have nothing before the TLSE but my guitar (Paul Gilbert Ibanez - all stock). Both files should appear under my original post.
What is the Guitar Rig?

Guitar Rig 2 (the current version...Guitar Rig has been discontinued) can be found on Musician's Friend here: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product?sku=708231.
It's a $499 computer software/pedal board combo that appears to do much of the same thing as the TLSE. Having plunked down $499 for a TLSE, it'd be a tough sell to get me to buy something like Guitar Rig 2 just to get better "metal" distortion.
I think a lot of what people say is missing in the TLSE's "heavy" sounds is in the distortion, not necessarily drive/gain. From the crunchy/fizzy/buzzy perspective, the Boss-inspired OD stompboxes in the TLSE give an edgier (but thinner sounding, IMO) distortion than the amp models. While tinkering around looking for a way to get more distortion out of the TLSE OD stomps, a quick way to get more of the biting top-end harmonics on the TLSE is to turn off the cabinet modeling.
Another way to get heavy distortion would be to pick up something like the Keeley "Twilight Zone" pedal (Boss MT-2 "Metal Zone" with upgrades.) It gives heavy distortion to the point of annoyance (for me), but the Keeley-modded Metal Zone has gobs of distortion and I've heard some pretty decent results from it (when used judiciously with a tube amp.) You can get one of these from Robert Keeley Electronics for $150 (http://www.robertkeeley.com/product.php?id=16 is the direct link to the pedal page. You can also find them on eBay, potentially for less $$$. And, if you have a Metal Zone pedal already, Keeley will add the "Twilight Zone" mods to it for $75.) The "Twilight Zone" pedal is a one-trick pony to me, but it would give you more *distortion* (but not necessarily more gain/tone/richness) than you can get from the stock TLSE. (It also won't set you back another $500 like Guitar Rig 2.
)
Just my $0.02...you get what you pay for.

I have this desire for
Fri, 2006/04/21 - 6:54pm — Kerry LehrbassI have this desire for additional sounds nicely covered. Be warned... AT A SEVERE price... I use a Mesa Boogie Triaxis as a 99 channel, MIDI contollable tube preamp. Seriously every sound one could ever imagine can be obtained and called up instantly via MIDI cc. As Heavy and dark, Nice and Brown, JC clean, or evan "Black". Added to TLSE the pallet is litterally unlimited. I also have Guitar Rig 1 but find the "Real" tube pre is the answer. The Trixis is the most diverse preamp I've ever used.
I also am using a Mesa Boogie 20/20 Stereo Power Amp to "warm up" all digital processing. That amp is only rated at 22 watts Class A per channel. Incredibly loud for 22 watts IMHO. Wonderfully responsive to the TLSE. *****Mesa Boogie 20/20 + TLSE is ultra sweet sounding*****.
I swear, the 20/20 sounds so great. Even plugged directly in to it, without anything else. It sounds sort of like a warmed up JC120. Ultra clean, tube warmed amplification. Adding this to the TLSE is the ticket. This is my secret weapon when digitally processing. HUGE HUGE difference.
I follow this up with a BBE 462 Sonic Maximizer <--- Wow what a differnce. A/B switching litterally sounds like I remove a pillow from in from of my speakers when the Max is activated. A/B switching about 5 times will result in leaving the Max on forever, and never turning it off again. The true "Desert Island Non-effect Device" Can be found cheap on ebay (The one I have is Stereo). Dollar for dollar, nothing else comes close as a single way to make your sound prestine.
None of these items are necessary, or required for the TLSE to sound awesome, but are merely ways I work to augment and enhance it. I also have the TC Electronic G-System as well. (Sent the PODxt Live back for a refund) But, I find this TLSE to have a unique, one-of-a-kind sound which I have discovered to be needed in my studio. Love the straight forward "Old School" controls and simplicity.
Analogman Silver Mod
Fri, 2006/04/21 - 7:09pm — Kerry LehrbassAnalogman Silver Mod TS-9
One other thing I am doing is to run an Analogman TS-9 Silver Mod
http://www.analogman.com/ts9silv.htm
as an insert. It can be a boost, or used to add an addional layer of Overdrive and even full on heavy overdrive.
This alone may be one of the cleanest ways to add another layer of tube overdrive sound to your TLSE. This is a wonderfully musical overdrive. Many say it is one of the best available at any cost. However, this is highly subjective. This may not "Blow your METAL HEAD off" but it will give huge depth to your overdrive/tube sounds. This pedal will surely be found on the pedal boards of Many many pro guitarists around the world. I might have to kill both you and your mother if you stole mine from me.
