Tonelab SE and stereo amps

Kieren's picture

Hi everyone (and maybe, in particular, Monte and Chico)

I got a cheap second Tech 21 powerengine from ebay. I'll pick it up this weekend with the intention of running the SE in stereo through the two Tech 21's. I know some of the people on this forum have had experience in doing this in their rigs. Calling on your expertise/knowledge, (i) is there anything special I should know about setting up a stereo rig and (ii) what are the best patches/effects you have had success with in stereo?

Looking forward, as always, to you help.

well I have had some

well I have had some experience using my 2 Hartke G60c's, I use them juat the same as one would use one only Left to one and right to the other, it sounds so much better, fuller and stereo effects are great. I am running both the SE and my G9 into a mixer then out to the amps. the Hartke's are 1x12 but thats all one really needs to "monitor" as you can always split out to FOH. I was thinking the tech 21's were stereo already but I guess I was wrong. but the techs are good as I hear so it you got the cabs you are gonna rock I'm sure. I'm still (after 2-3 years) trying to fine tune my rig, lately I've been leaning on the G9 more because there are IMO better metal tones.
My room mate (a GIT grad.) has a Hughes & Kettner switch blade that sounds awsome, so I'm gonna try and match it as close as I can, we did a video a few sundays back at an NA fundraiser and I put 2 on my youtube site of me singing Paranoid and another of Crazy Train (I was wearing the Ozzy Holloween wig and glasses) where he's using the HK amp with a stack. search mself61 on youtube if you wanna check it out.
one of these days I'll get my a$$ in gear and take some photos of the "small" studio setup.
one key word for you though "EXPERIMENT"

Thanks Monte for your advice

Thanks Monte for your advice - I will certainly check out your recent youtube stuff. So ... (just double checking cause you first go into a mixer), you would just run the left output in the left amp and the right output into the right amp - no need for a splitter cable or anything??

I always run the TLSE into a stereo tube power amp. Take the right output and left output and it will work, no splitter or anything needed. Unlike some other FX units you cannot seperately adjust paramaters like delay times for left and right channel. Although for instance chorus has sort of stereo effect. You will get a much wider sound. For practise i run the power amp into 1 stereo 4x12 cab. Sound is quite good. In my live rig i run the power amp into two 4x12 mono cabs. If you place the cabs (or in your case the amps)with some distance between em you will get a nice full sound! I like it most with two identical cabs and use 2 seperate microphones into the PA. I like it alot, my fellow bandmates not always complaining all they can hear is guitar....

I try to keep it simple, of course we all do not have the same equipment in our rig, some things sound better that others , you will figure out whats best I'm sure. the only reason I use the mixer is because it allows me to play both the SE and G9 at the same time or separately in stereo. with just the SE you can got straight to the amps. you will have to adjust the volumes to level each side though.
