USB-MIDI Adaptors

strngz's picture

Hello, Everyone!

I read in the User's Guide for my TLSE that it's incompatible with certain USB-MIDI adaptors. Does anybody know which ones are (and aren't) OK to use? I would gladly welcome any recommendations, at least when it comes to a basic adaptor seeing as the TLSE is the only thing I'll be using it for... Many thanks!

I am using the Roland/Edirol

I am using the Roland/Edirol USB- Midi interface with Mac OS X. It was easy to install, and costs about $40.00. Also, I've read that Yamaha makes a Midi/USB as well, and I'm sure that its just as good.

For $15, I have had success

For $15, I have had success with a Joystick Midi cable that plugs right in to my PC's soundcard. The specific model is "MIDIMAN M-AUDIO JOYSTICK MIDI CABLE"

Good luck,

As said, the edirol works

As said, the edirol works fine, but is no longer being sold at musicians friend.

The Yamaha UX16 USB MIDI Interface, which is what I recommend in my tutorial should work fine as well.

I use the M-Audio Uno. £30

I use the M-Audio Uno. £30 or something like that. Because I am not to hot with computers and their workings it took me a while to set it up (I struggle to text on my phone), but now it is sorted and well easy to use. It even has a pulsating light like me Apple!

Thanks for all the valuable

Thanks for all the valuable info, everyone!!!

I unfortunately don't have a joystick port. I'm using one of those newer design Apple iMac G5 computers. It's sleek, and works like a charm, but to achieve such form, they gave up some opportunity for greater function. I guess that's what the Power Macs (at probably a good $2000 US just for the tower). Not for me. I'd rather spend that kind of hard-earned money on guitars...

I'm releived to hear that the M-Audio Uno works, as that's the cheapest adaptor over at my local Guitar Center. I believe I'll have to make a trip over there to pick one up!

I'm sure that I'll have more questions, and I feel pleasantly confident that I have a great resourse in the folks here to assist!

Talk is for recognizing problems. Being part of the solution takes action...

USB/Midi adapter..comment

USB/Midi adapter..comment anyone?

As expected, each of the MIDI/USB adapters named here gets mixed reviews out in the "real world"...I could not find any reviews relating directly to Tonelab SE. I'm looking for one that will be good for PC and Mac...any body have any opinion on the M-audio UNO?

Thanks

I used to recommend a

I used to recommend a different unit, but because I heard all good things about the UNO, I switched my recommendation.

I haven't heard anything specifically bad about any of them though.

I use the Uno and it works

I use the Uno and it works absolutely fantastic for me. I've had no problems in the least bit with it. It cost me about $30 from Musicians Friend and it was the best $30 I spent. Easy to use especially for a guy like me!! :]

I too bought a cable to plug

I too bought a cable to plug into the joystick port. But it didn't work; it turned out that the power supply (the 5V, TTL logic!) at the 'OUT' connector sank to +/- 2 V! The tonelab drew too much current and loaded the power supply too much. The solution was to pull an old Roland MPU card out of the closset and use that for the 'OUT' connector. It works perfectly fine now!
I guess this is why alot of people seem to have problems with this setup; their soundcard isn't up for the job...

Best Regards,
Koen

If you're using the game

If you're using the game port adaptor of your sound card for MIDI, you will need a Windows MIDI driver for your game port installed. Some sound cards install this by default, others don't. You can check your Device Manager under Sound Cards to see if it is installed. I use a Gravis breakout box with my SBLive for MIDI and it works fine.
