Hello everyone,
I own a TLSE. With headphones over the PC (Creative Soundblaster Platinum XFi) it works fine and the sound is very good. However, I am having problems to get nice sounds out of it from amps, PA systems... Well. I will describe you shortly my attempts. First, some of my gear:
- Washburn N2 from 1996; (I have bought a Gibson Les Paul but could not yet test it as it did not arrive...)
- Tech 21 Trademark 60 Guitar Amp;
- Marshall AS50R (Acoustic Amp)
- A PA system used on rehearsals (do not own it).
Initially, I tried to connect the TLSE to my Tech 21 through its return input. I set the TLSE output to line and used cabinet simulation. The results were awful and too trebly. Switching to amplifier output on the TLSE did not work as the sound was even worse (unclear and muddy). I also tried switching off the cabinet simulation but it worsened things up. The PA system was next on the try list. It is not of very high quality but serves me well when I am singing. The problem is that the sound remains harsh and aggressive giving me headaches. I cut the treble to a minimum (1.5) and the middle to 3.0 on the TLSE and reinforced the basses (5.5). I also increased the distance between the pickups of my guitar and the its strings. The sound improved slightly. I also tested the TLSE on my Marshall AS50R through its return input. Sound is more acceptable but I still don't hear a clear, round and rich sound. Possibly, my guitar is part of the problem, but I don't think that it is the ONLY problem.
Right now, as a result, I am selling my Tech 21 (which I regret as I think it is a fine guitar amp) for buying an amplified speaker (PA). In the store, I was told that this would be a good solution. I thought of buying a good all tube guitar amp, but, in the end, I won't be able to use its capabilities at full extent if I want to use the TLSE (I should use it through the return input of the amp, thus loosing its pre amp characteristics). A solution would be to give up of the TLSE and just buy a very good 3 channel guitar amp. What would you advice?
Thank you very much for your help.

I use my TLLE direct to PA
Sat, 2008/08/16 - 6:50pm — tbyrdI use my TLLE direct to PA and get very good results. Being the old school person that I am, I keep thinking that I should be using an amp to get "that" guitar sound. I've owned and tried a Tech 21 PE 60, Atomic 1-12 18W, and a Fender HR Deluxe. BTW, I test my sounds for the direct connect using a JBL EON 15" 300W powered monitor.
Bottom line, I don't gain anything by going through the amp. In fact, my sound man prefers the direct connection. My setup is: Godin xtSA, TLLE, Behringer Ultra-G (cab simulation used). You might try the Ultra-G box. It cuts piercing highs on the Line setting, but is not dark like the amp setting. Good luck.

Sat, 2008/08/16 - 8:43pm — luismiguelcostaThank you very much for your reply tbyrd. Just one additional question. Do you only use the Ultra-G box as cab simulation, or do you couple it with that supplied by your TLLE? If don't use that of the TLLE, then could you tell me why... for instance, do you find the TLLE cab simulations not to be sufficiently good (or even to be bad)?
Also, I have listened to your samples. I appreciate your sound. Is it exactly the same when you record and when you pass it through your PA system?
Thanks again.

Sat, 2008/08/16 - 9:48pm — tbyrdBoth - One of the patches I use the most is the AC30TB with no cab emulation. For my clean tone, I use a BLK 2 x 12 with BLK 2 x 10 cab. Yes, they are the same. If you cranked my recordings up on a loud PA, that's pretty much what I get live. The sound guy usually leaves my channel flat, unless the room is lousy.

Well, as I also sing and have a folk, a semi-acoustic and an classical acoustic (and will soon buy a bass guitar), it seems to me that a PA system like your JBL EON 15" 300W powered monitor is the best option for me. ;) I would still like you to clarify one aspect, please. Yous said that you mostly use "the AC30TB with no cab emulation" (I suppose that here you only use the Ultra-G box) and that for clean tone you use the "BLK 2 x 12 with BLK 2 x 10 cab". This is the part that I don't quite understand.
Then again, this is the first time I hear about the Ultra-G box, I must admit. Is the Ultra-G selectable allowing to select two different cabs. Or are you combining your TLLE cab simulator with some selection of the Ultra-G simulation? (I think that the Ultra-G only simulates 4x12 speaker cabinets?)
Once again, thanks a lot for your both quick and helpful replies.
P.S. --> What do you think of this one http://www.thomann.de/thoiw10_palmer_pdi09_prodinfo.html ?
Basically the Ultra-G for me
Tue, 2008/08/19 - 7:26am — tbyrdBasically the Ultra-G for me just gets rid of that high edge that to me doesn't sound natural compared to a real amp. Then, the use of cab sim helps me select a tone (more or less midrange, highs, etc) kind of like using an EQ for whatever sound I'm going after. The Ultra-G only simulates a 4x12 cab. I haven't tried the Palmer, but from what I read it works really good. I have tried the H&K Red Box Classic, but didn't like it as much as the Ultra-G.
