Sounds to me like you bought the wrong pedal :-). I think the solid state amplifiers or effects units, gives that death metal distortion you want. The SE is a vintage amp modulator, valve amps have even harmonics depending on the output transformer and topology.(might be other reasons aswell) I think though not sure that you're looking for odd and even harmonics in your distortion.

Not 100% sure that the SE will give you that tone you want.

the tonelab really doesn'

the tonelab really doesn' replicate death metal distortion very well because its a vintage amp simulator, but you get some really heavy tones from it with the recto amp and vintage 30 cab played together with tthe treble boost pedal in the pedal section. it gets prettty heavy for my taste,somewhat colse to rthe sound i can get from my engl amp with the mt-2 pedal from boss. if you'd like i can e-mail you my patch from the tonelab or post it here.
