If anyone has had a similar problem with their SE, I'd love to hear how you've solved it, but mine has always been so limited on the EQ that I have not been able to get satisfactory guitar tones when they should have easily been accessible. If I was using a regular guitar amp I might have been able to make adjustments on the front end tone controls, but that is just a global adjustment. I'm finding I like to change the tone on each patch. If I'm doing Bridge of Sighs then I roll off all the highs and presence. If I'm playing some Rush material I boost the mids. For acoustic passages on Led Zeppelin songs I have an acoustic pickup in my electric guitar and I like that to be sparkley bright! The only way to do this is to insert a MIDI programmable EQ somewhere in the signal chain. I purchased one and it seems the only two places it might go is in the INSERT (which puts it at the front - not a bad spot for an EQ but it does not affect the final tone after the AMP and CAB models like a normal tone control would)...or....I can stick it at the end. That seems like the logical place to me. What do you think? I would run from the SE into the MIDI EQ and then out to the Crate PowerBlock I"m using to power my 2x12 stereo-wired Mojave open-back cab with Celestion G12H Anniversaries (great speakers BTW).
If anyone out there has some better ideas (or similar frustrations) I'd like to hear from you. I'm waiting on my MIDI cable to show, so I haven't been able to experiment much. I think the MIDI Programmable option is the best one since when the patch changes, the program will automatically change via MIDI out signal from the SE. It was the only thing I could think of.
Thoughts, comments....I'd love to hear from you.

p.s. Some have told me that the EQ section of the new LE version is better, but after trying one at GC that was not my experience. Besides I have some great custom patches I've agonized over for hours so I don't want to lose those and they aren't transferable to the LE. I'll stick with BIG BLUE!!!

Tue, 2008/07/22 - 11:10am — guitarmikeIve had some experience with the rocktron voodoo valve, and one powerful thing that unit has going for it is that there is an EQ section before the distortion. It also has Eq in the distortion and EQ after the distortion. I find the pre Eq to be really usefull. It allows you to roll off some highs and boost the mids. I find that for clean tone I like a nice bright top but for dirty sounds That bright top can get a little brittle sounding. I solve this problem by rolling back the tone on my strat. I have considered adding an Eq the my TLLE, but I would want it to be programmable and midi controlled so that the parameters would change when I change prgrams on the TLLE. The only EQ Ive found like this is a rack type and I just dont want to deal with the cables and stuff. If there was a pedal I could put on my pedal board, Id jump on it. The TLLE does have a post Eq in the LN2 setting, but, I dont beleive it is programmable. There is a conversion program that would allow you to change your settings to from TLSE to TLLE. I have not used the SE so I cant comment on how it sounds, but the LE works really good in my opinion. I also just started using a BBe sonicstomp at the end of the chain and it does help both the hi's and lo's. Let us know about the Eq setup you decide on, and if you find a midi controlled stomp box, please, let me know.

Tue, 2008/07/22 - 1:48pm — tbyrdI would run from the SE into the MIDI EQ and then out to the Crate PowerBlock just like you mentioned. I think that's the best spot. What kind of EQ is that?

Thanks for the input. Very
Tue, 2008/07/22 - 8:42pm — jtm-45@pacbell.netThanks for the input. Very much appreciated. I purchased an old Digitech MEQ Dual 14 band programmable MIDI EQ. I am connecting it to the MIDI OUT on the TLSE and if all goes as planned it will change EQ programs (in stereo) each time I change patches on the SE. I know front end EQ is a great thing but I think for my particular situation the back end EQ will service the entire patch boosting or cutting what the SE is producing as a final pre-amplified signal. I will experiment with it and see if that solves my problem. Frankly, I don't think it will take a lot of correction, just a few DB boost or cut in a few bands to get me where I want to be. I'm pretty happy with the overall sound of the unit as it is, but if I need to put a smaller unit in front of the SE, I have a couple old stompbox EQs I could use for that. I just didn't want to introduce any more noise on the front end....
I did not know about the program to convert SE patches to the LE. That is news to me. I knew a few guys had converted specific patches, but I have entire sets programmed into my laptop and/or the SE so I didn't wanted to lose them. Also, when you go from one unit to another the tone changes by virtue of the tube and tube trim and other minor issues having to do with the new unit. I am so satisfied with the tone of this thing I haven't felt the need to switch to my big gear since this works great in clubs or if I am playing a larger venue I just put my 2x12 in front of my like a wedge and then I'm blowing in my face as loud as I can stand it...then send a mic signal in stereo to FOH. It's been working great so far.
I'll let you know how it works out. Thanks again!
