Can anyone recommend a MIDI interface for use with the LE?

Bujin's picture

I just tried a USB/MIDI cable, hoping to not have to shell out the big bucks for a formal MIDI interface box, but it looks like the manual is correct (surprise, surprise) and these direct connection cables don't always work. Mine doesn't work at all as a matter of fact.

Budget is an issue, so if anyone knows of a good low cost option, I would definitely appreciate the advice.

Thanks,

Sean

Don't buy yet! Lets see if we can get it to work. Does the cable show up as an audio device in the device manager? If not have read of this

http://www.arrangerworkstation.com/manuals/USBMIDI-WinXP.pdf

It talks about getting a yamaha usb/midi cable working but its generic to all cables.

Then in the tonelab editor midi setup it should show the usb audio device and if you've got the cables in the right places you'll see your patches. If not, turn off the tonelab and close the editor then swap the cables around and try again. Good luck

I'm actually on a Mac, but I'll give that a read to see if there is anything applicable. I get a USB/MIDI device in the drop down under MIDI setup in the editor when I've got it plugged in, but after I hit OK to the settings, it just returns an error and tells me to check my connections. The plugs are marked IN and OUT and I had them plugged in to the right sockets on the LE. Are you saying that they might still be switched around?

Thanks for the quick reply.

Update - Yep... that did the trick. I switched the in/out plugs and it worked just fine. Glad you suggested I give it a second chance.

Thanks for your help.

Well... in my own defense, I did have to put the OUT plug in the IN socket and vice versa.

makes sense in a stupid way

I think a lot of people see it would make TO much sense if in goes to in and out to out. if they made the in and out plugs a little different it would help the confusion but that would make it TO easy and one would break the pins trying to put them in wrong.

my experience as a first

my experience as a first class midi hater is that nothing ever works the first time and rarely the 2nd.

Yeah, I'm not sure I understand why they rely strictly on MIDI for a computer connection. That's one thing I'd like to see upgraded on a future model. It needs a USB connection.

Not sure if it is too late

Not sure if it is too late in the day and you have it sorted, but I bought a Midiman Midisport off good old ebay, plugged it in with the SE and it worked first time.

well there is so much stuff thats been MIDI for years and years, it is a great thing but yeah to bad they didnt do things a little different, it would make a lot of stuff obsolete if they changed now.
