Old Blue Has Got The Blues?

ChicoBluez's picture

I'm getting what sounds like 60 cycle hum from my TLSE. Last show I used the Zoom G9 and was really missing all the unique tones I've come so used to.

I will open it up and start poking around...if anyone has a clue, please let me know.

the G9 would need some

the G9 would need some tweaking to get the tones your after since most are based on blues style, although I think you can do it if you sit with it a while and start using the "U" patches for your style. hope you get the SE fixed and try and get pics and or post the process.

the only thing I can think of with the 60 cycle is maybe you added something new to the chain or even in the room possibly in the house, or did this occur on a gig where there may have been some type of interference ?. I'm thinking it's not the cables cause your G9 seemed clear (I assume you used the same ones). I once took apart a brand new Rolls headphone splitter cause something wasn't right, replace some caps and later stupidly figured out the adapter wasn't plugged in with the rest of the 15 other wallwarts (I know I know... quit laughing now cheesey grin).

I would start my poking

I would start my poking around at the power supply. I have discovered that if I place the transformer too close to my SE or amplifier it will induce 60 cycle hum just by proximity and once I move the transformer away the hum stops. Also, Monte is right about things causing interference. Anything with a large motor will do it. Clothes dryer, air conditioner, etc.

Well I'm sure he already new

Well I'm sure he already new these things, I'm just thinking he may have overlooked something that may cause it, and I wasn't thinking about the PS being to close so that goes to show we just can't think of everything all the time.

I agree with Monte, you

I agree with Monte, you might have overlooked something. I had a similar problem and was absolutely sure there is no groundloop, but when I "revisited" the issue a week later I found that yes it was a groundloop...

So my 2 cents - could it be a ground loop?
Did you change anything in your cabling setup?
Any computers or monitors close to you?
Does the hum stay when you use the TLSE alone, just plugin the guitar and simple headphones, and all computers/monitors in the room really switched off? If it is quiet with just the guitar and headphones connected, I'd go hunt for a groundloop before opening the TLSE.
If it still hums with just the guitar and headphones connected, does it hum when you unplug the guitar cable from the TLSE? If no, try a different guitar or cable.

Thanks to all for your help

Thanks to all for your help and advice!

I finally got around to working on my TLSE and found it was a speaker cable instead of a shielded cable in my set up. Great relief! To think I did 2 shows with that noise going on.

Thanks again! The TLSE is still Rockn' the Blues

Happy to here that it wasn't

Happy to here that it wasn't a serious problem. Despite the many threads regarding problems with the foot switches, power supplies, and such, there seems to be many more Tonelabs out there that are still working and sounding great. As long as all our cables are shielded, of course! smile cheesey grin applause
