DI box with TLSE

fingers's picture

Hi all, just throwing this question into the mix really, I use a variety of setups, but with the TLSE my favourite involves a Tech 21 power cube, and although it has XLR out, I am not convinced the sound engineer gets a better sound than a miked cab.

Do any of you guys use this type of setup, and do you mike or go direct.

as i see it the advantage of going xlr out on the tech 21 means that the sound engineer is not affected by any tonal changes made by me on the amp.

Must say though, that the more I play with the TLSE, the more it grows on me.

Thanks

Fingers

I use a Radial JDI. I've heard criticisms that they are TOO transparent. Check out Radial though, they make a good DI and have several options for varying budgets.

I'm using the Tech21 PE60 with XLR out to the FOH board. I also use in ear monitoring so my stage volume is relatively low -- I keep it there just to get some light feedback when neeed. So for me, direct is working well and is one less source of stage mic bleed.

i've used the tlse through a variety of amps, which have been miked, mainly a fender deluxe 112, which works very well with the tlse. But i think it sounds best with a DI straight to the board. I use a Hughes and Kettner Red Box Classic, which gives the tlse more body and a thicker sound.

I use the DI out on my Traynor. With it I am able to get the exact sound FOH as I get through the amp for 90% of my patches. Radial is my favored DI when not using the amp, followed in close third by an old ADA MicroCab II. The ADA simulates a speaker set (7 choices) being mic'd by an SM57. It also has level, presence and thump controls to dial in what I am wanting, or I can bypass the emulations all together.

Thanks for the info guys, H

Thanks for the info guys, H & K Red box has a good reputation, although I'm not sure if it would be better to use it before the Tech21 or after, what do you think?

I tried the H&K Red Box

I tried the H&K Red Box Classic and didn't like it as much as the Behringer Ultra-G (red box), and the Ultra-G is much cheaper.
