Tube Trim problem

rojo's picture

I seem to be having problem with the stock valve/tube on my SE
every time i do a tube trim i have to adjust it
i even tried a replacement stock valve and once again the same problem so i then tried some other brands such as Mullard and Groove tube and did a tube trim after installing them and let the valve warm up and never had to do again but as i wrote before if i use stock valve/tube i always have to trim it each time i turn the unit on
The reason i am using stock valve/tube is i feel after trying other brands and gain factors eg 12u7 , 12at7 the stock sounds the best for me
yes mabye both of the stock ones are faulty but i doubt it as i would be having other problems i feel
so if anybody has any idea as to why this is i would like to know.

I'm thinking that just maybe

I'm thinking that just maybe some tubes are more sensitive to how warm or cold the air is in the room (or where ever), probably not though because you say the Mullard does not do this would seem inconsistent you would expect a better tube be more sensitive to warmth/cold. if you let it warm up a long time then test "how far off" it is it should be very slight if not perfectly calibrated where the leds are all on. if it is just slight I wouldn't worry about it if it still sounds as good as it does when its perfect.

I would have to agree and

I would have to agree and add that it even varies tube to tube. I use the stock tube in my SE and I am not able to tune it to a precise reading as the last 2 digits seem to be in constant flux. It was this way with my previous ToneLab,as desktop unit, as well (only worse).

I would imagine location, condition of power, etc. plays a large factor. But like any good piece of equipment, it gets close enough for rock and roll (and jazz, and blues, and fusion, and... smile )
