Announcing the TonelabConverter

Zeffi's picture

Here is the first (and maybe only?) version of the TonelabConverter, a piece of free software for converting between Tonelab LE and Tonelab SE patches. The development of the software started sometimes in august 2007, and has continued occasionally since then, mostly at weekends. I have not made this all alone. I’m very grateful for all encouragement and support that Kaal has given when this software has evolved. He has contributed with a lot of good ideas, testings, finding bugs, making the initial conversion rules etc etc. Thank you Kaal for all your kind help !!!

Because there doesn’t exist a 1-to-1 mapping between the LE and the SE, the conversion of patches is controlled by user editable conversion rules. The rules tell the converter what to do when converting, for example, a SE patch to a LE patch and there is LE parameters that has no counterpart in the SE patch. These rules reside in two xml-files that have to be in the same directory as the exe-file for the program to work. Eventually someone will modify and refine these rules and make these new rules (= xml-files) available to the Tonelab community.

The program requires that .NET framework 2.0 is installed on your computer (I think it will also work with higher versions). The framework redistributable package can be downloaded from Microsoft (Google by “.net framework version 2.0”).

You find the converter and the two xml-files at http://www.abo.fi/~skronber/Tonelab . Download all three files (TonelabConverter.exe, TonelabConverterLE2SE.xml, TonelabConverterSE2LE.xml) into a single directory. There is not much error handling implemented in the program, so if you, for some reason, get inconsistent xml-files (for example if you modify them in a text editor) the program will behave unpredictably.

Have a good time with the TonelabConverter! I hope it will have a positive effect on the activity in the patch exchange forums.

although I'm not unpacked yet (probably when I get my house) I have no way to test this as an SE user, I'm sure it will be more useful to the LE users being that 99% of the patches here a SE, but it should come in handy so GOOD WORK GUYS !!!

There are a couple LE patches laying around that were uploaded with SE extension renames to be able to post them. Now I have THE tool to check em out. This rocks. I am grateful this can happen with patches. Brand "L" never seemed to play well with its improved counterparts. THANKS!

Hi Yannis,

1) which operating system do you use? The converter is programmed for Windows. I use it on Windows XP. It probably works on Vista as well, but for sure not on a MAC.

2) You will need the ".NET framework 2.0" on your PC as well. You can download it from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=0856EACB-4362-4....

3) If it still does not work, what exactly is the failure notice you see?
