Atomic Reactor 112-18

tbyrd's picture

Just got it today. Been wanting to try one of these forever, so I finally got one off ebay. First impressions - I like it. Very nice bottom end (which I was hoping for) and nice smooth top end (which I was also hoping for). Now I just need to record some clips and see how it compares with my direct tone. Anybody else enjoying one of these?

I owned an Atomic 112-50 for

I owned an Atomic 112-50 for a couple months, then had an offer to sell it that I could not refuse.
The biggest differences between the 18 & 50 are the tubes and the 50 has a "volume control" on the back.

Unfortunately at the time of my ownership I had a ToneLab desktop I bought from eBay that was experiencing difficulties so I never really got to fully appreciate the two together.

The 112-50 has a LOT of bottom end-almost too much, and was a little dark for my taste. It also was the same size as my Vetta (which I was hoping for something smaller).

I now own a Traynor Custom Special 50. It's like an AC-30 met a Mesa. It's smaller than the atomic (and it fits in the trunk of my KIA along with my TLSE and guitar), and has a master volume, presence and resonance controls that work when I am plugged directly into the Power Amp In.

I would love to hear the 112-18 one of these days to see how much different the EL tubes sound from the 6L6s. The Atomics are a phenominal amp, are super sturdy, and would probably cost 3x as much if made in the US.

el84 and 6l6 are my favorite

el84 and 6l6 are my favorite tubes. The el84's will be creamier and "chimmier" is that a word? The 6l6's will have more bottom end slightly scooped compared to the el84. The el84 would closer to the 6L6 than an EL34.

FB; Traynors make some nice

Traynors make some nice amps.
I think its hard to find any Atomics to preview.
I've been happy with mine, though its heavy.
My TLSE is a nice match with the Atomic.
The closed back cabinet is another feature that +1.

Tom King has a great product

Tom King has a great product in the Atomic amp line. Once he makes a more compact edition he will have my attention again.
The Traynor I own has a 3/4 closed back-just enough to let the low end breathe a little. FWIW I have played mostly on amps with open backs vs. sealed cabinets. Probably my most favorite closed back cab of all time is a Marshall 4/10. I love its punch.
