NOS tube for your ToneLab ?

sv-erik's picture

Hi

Have anyone tried a NOS Mullard tube in your ToneLabSE and if, did it give you a more detailed sound ?

I replaced the default valve

I replaced the default valve with a Mullard 12ax7 a while ago and have stuck with it . i have also tried many other brands of valves but at the end of the day the Mullard seem to me to be the pick of them, to my ears the Mullard gave a more clearer sound and seem to round the sound out more,
I guess the only way you are going to find out is to try
for yourself.

I put a Mullard 12ax7 (old

I put a Mullard 12ax7 (old and used, but tested well, not NOS) in mine about a year back. The overdrive isn't as aggressive: it really reduced the unpleasant digital clipping that I used to hear with my stock 12ax7.

Is it more detailed? I can't say. But it is without doubt less harsh-sounding. I think it strikes the happy medium between stock 12ax7 and the many 12au7s I tried, which all seemed weak.

I'm happy with the "stock"

I'm happy with the "stock" tube at this point. I like the idea of "less harsh" though.

Ok, I have tried several

Ok, I have tried several tubes, and the most well sounding so far is a GrooveTubes 12AX7R it has a nice creamy sound and break up a little later than the other tubes I tried. The stock tube sound a bit harsh for my ears, both in the pedal and in my amps.

@cDub
I don't see how the tube can produce digital clipping at all ?

Tubes can also sound unpleasant and non organic in a full tube amp.

GROOVE TUBES GT-12AX7R

GROOVE TUBES GT-12AX7R PREAMP TUBE
New tube from Russia. Slightly brighter and lower gain, quicker compression than the GT12AX7C. Great for most Fender® type amps, may not be well suited for high gain Fender type amps (such as Boogies).

This looks promising too...

GROOVE TUBES GT-12AX7-M PREAMP TUBE
The new GT12AX7M is an exact reissue of the original Mullard 12AX7/ECC83 dual triode preamp tube. The ultimate vintage 12AX7 by which all others are judged. This tube delivers harmonically complex tone and midrange warmth that is just not available in any other manufactured tube, the 12AX7M will really wake up an old (or new) Fender®, Ampeg or Marshall tube amp! Made in China.

on order, expected arrival date unknown

It's amazing how much difference these little parts can make.

Hey, "SV"...what kind of cable do you use?
So far I really like the reproduction through FullTone cables.

sv - Well, I don't know how

sv - Well, I don't know how they could produce digital clipping either, but that's what it sounds like to me.

Very inorganic, and the only way I could get rid of it with the stock tube was to turn the trim down to the point where the patches sounded weak and tinny. Alternatively, the Mullard sounds great when trimmed to the standard setting.

You tell me why. I'm no expert.

firebrand - I've heard nothing but bad reviews on the GT-12AX7-M tubes. NO personal experience, though.

Hi cDub I'm no expert my

Hi cDub

I'm no expert my self but digital clipping to me is harsh noise like broken glass or something like that, and as you say this sound is pure non organic.

I found that all the tubes I've tried where sounding their best when tube trim was set so all 5 indicators light up.

I do believe the change of sound is equal to changing tube types and not changing the tubes power, but if it works for you, then it just fine wink

I found some useful

I found some useful information in this article:

http://thetubestore.com/12ax7review.html

I'm going to try out the JAN-Philips 12AX7WA and the Tesla/JJ 12AX7/ECC83-S at the end of May (after my wife's birthday) to see which one of these may work well for the ToneLab also. I wanted to try something different, but when I thought the preamp tube in my original TL was bad the local dealer only had EH tubes in stock.

I've switched back to a

I've switched back to a 12ax7 (Mesa) only because the RCA 12au7 was from circa 1959 (almost as old as me). I can't afford equiptment malfunctions live. I will say that the best way to get people fired up is to bring up the tube replacement topic.

Bottom line is...the MOJO is in your head, heart, and hands. The TLSE is no more than an excellent channeling tool.

The tones I get are nothing more than what the TLSE does best...classic guitar tones that will always stand the test of time and the ever changing, but still the same musical climate.

I just put a JJ Ax7 in mine

I just put a JJ Ax7 in mine and I'd say it improved the tone, but not as much as I was hoping for. The bottom end did tighten up a little, but still sounds flabby when I turn up the bass on the amp models. It could be my headphones as well. I'll try some others and report back.

Though I do not know how

Though I do not know how well it would work, it would be fun to swap tubes by mail. Everyone who wants to participate would have to sign up and be willing to buy a tube on the list. The biggest factor would be how well the tubes would hold up with all that shipping around (and that everyone used the same packing method).
