Vox AC30 and Vox extension cab

rojo's picture

I have my TLSE hooked up to my AC30cc2x and it sounds very clean and warm but recently i bought a Vox 2x12 extension cab to addon to my amp and when all connected and i switch down the omhs to 8 from 16 as told in the instruction book i loose that nice clean tone and the sound distorts so i was just wondering if anybody out there in Vox land may have an idea as to why this is so

That should actually be a

That should actually be a head room boost add 2 more speakers.

Wait are you using a passive cable to connect the external cabinet, That would do it? Your not disconnecting the internal speakers are you, and is this the cab that goes with the amp? Does the sound go to crap on the 16Ω setting with the extension cab connected. Have you tried the extension cab with another amp yet?

A tube amp can easily handle an Ω miss match some makers actually build with a mismatch. So an 8Ω amp can be connected to 4Ω or 16Ω cab without much risk. You'll just need to change power tubes more often. Of course there are always exceptions!

BTW why use a tonelab with such a wonderful amp??? cheesey grin 30W PA distortion pretty loud cheesey grin

I am using the cable that

I am using the cable that came with the cabinet, if it is passive or not iam not sure, how do i tell?
The AC3O is the one with the Blue Alnicos speakers and the cabinet has the wharlfdale speakers now at first i thought that the cab speakers might not be a good match for the amp speakers but that does not seem to be the case according to a vox tech, but then another vox tech told me that it is not a good mix and i should use the cab with the blue Alnicos but that cab costs 3 times as much and he advised me not to run the amp at 16Ω with the cab connected so who do i believe and i do have it connected to the right output, so i am going to take the whole rig to a Vox tech and see if we can work through this problem because this AC30 has the sweetest warm creamy sound i have ever played through and i love it and i was hoping that when i connected another vox being the cab it would be a bigger not louder sweet warm creamy sound
and why do i use a Tonelab SE? well sometimes i ask myself the same question, but they are a great unit and they are the only pedal unit that i have tried that sounds real,
Anyway thank you for your help and i hope to have an answer soon.
Bye for now

that amp might be one of the

that amp might be one of the few that running miss matched isn't the best idea. You could also try asking around on ppwatt.com. It's an amp building forum and that's one of the places i've learned so much about amps.

If the cable came with the cab it's the right cable.
