Anyone out there figured out how to open this thing up and mod it yet?
As I see lots of people modding fx pedals and the like.
Could you do the same to the SE?

I find your question intresting. Other than changing the tube and calibration of it, I am not familiar with tone or fuctional mods. I will say that if someone ever figures out how to separate the wah from the pedal section THAT would be a very cool mod. Most of the tone shaping is in the digital domain and would require updates to be modded or hot rodded. Hmmmm...an udate would be cool!

it's probably pretty much
Mon, 2008/03/10 - 11:24am — nomad100it's probably pretty much all digital, but it would be cool if the pedal would work like the ME-50 i had works as a volume until clicked down then it worked as what ever FX i set it too.
Besides you don't mode digital you reprogram!

Thu, 2008/03/13 - 7:29pm — mp2oldHaving done a lot of mods to cd players in the past, I can relate to the intrigue of making some changes to the SE. I basically changed out components from cheap factory resistors, caps, etc. to higher quality units. The cost was minimal compared to the $3-4,000 "hi-fi"cd players that are available. I modified a Radio Shack $89 cd player that stood toe to toe with a unit costing over $1,000. The mods were inexpensive, around $100 for parts and my labor to change out parts. It took me well over 3 months to accomplish, but that is because you need to check your work often to insure no mistakes were made.
I do agree that most of the tone shaping occurs within the programming parameters on the TL, but I also know that component choice CAN make a difference in the overall sound. It appears that VOX did make some good decisions in using higher quality resistors, (1% tolerance), but used the most readily available capacitors. Trust me, if you know any "hi-fi" tweakers, talk to them, they will agree that major improvements can be made.
I have purchased a second SE just for that reason. I do have some parts on hand, but I just like playing too much. It also takes a dedicated space to lay out the SE compared to a cd player. And TIME! If the mods would do anything to the sound like it did to the cd player, it would be well worth the effort. It would put the TL miles away from anything but a high dollar rack rig ( had those too). I know long post, but just wanted to share that it may be possible to make the TL even better. I still have an ADA MP2, best darn pre on the market. I used it until I got the TL.
Hmmmm...I wonder if I left them alone for a night....
That would be great to make
Mon, 2008/03/17 - 9:46am — mself61That would be great to make a few mods with caps, I would regret doing massive cap replacements though, I have not opened my SE to see how many there are but it would be nice to know which caps to change for the biggest results.
I am guessing that the difference between a CD player is the noise ratio that are presented in the specs. some people just may not hear a difference or may not consider it being worthwhile to do such mods.

Please continue your research! You may stumble into the tone heaven we all seek. It would be great if you made up a mod blueprint with a list of parts. I'd pay for that.

Wed, 2008/03/19 - 6:59am — nomad100As a general rule, you don't want hi-fi quality transparent caps in guitar products. At least when it comes to building tube amps. I personally don't like hearing ever string squeak! Good guitar tone comes from imperfections in the circuit!

I know of mods on units like MOTU equipment to improve noise and output quality and wondered if this could be applied to a TL?
I understand the digital nature of the unit but thought someone must have delved deeper into this area of experimentation...
