5thumbs Fizz Filter Sound Clips

5thumbs's picture

OK, for the folks who've been following the 'Mechanical resonance cabling & other tone shaping ideas' thread (http://www.tonelab.net/node/1407), here are the sound clips from the fizz filter I've been working on.

These patches were made using my Carvin Bolt tuned to drop-D. The signal path is Guitar->BOSS SD-1 (Monte Allums GT mod)->BOSS DS-1 (Monte Allums DS-1 mod)->BEEGem Pearly Gate (my custom noise gate)->Behringer REV2496 V-Verb PRO (touch of delay and reverb)->Fender Rumble 100 amp. I mic'd one amp with two SM57s in the positions to get the ugliest-possible sound...one at grill-distance, pointing straight into the center of the 15" speaker...the other at grill-distance, pointing directly into the tweeter.

The titles should be self-explanatory as to what is turned on/off on the fizz filter (a.k.a., DFD.) Clip 01 is the "ugly" sound, with all the digital fizz and no filtering at all. Clips 02 and 03 are variations with the two separate filters running one at a time. Clip 04 is the best-sounding (to my ears), with all the filters turned on.

Not that y'all can play along with your DFDs and set them the same way, but for what it's worth, I had the Tone Filter knob at 2 o'clock, the Notch Filter Frequency at 4:30 and the Notch Filter Width at 2 o'clock. These settings were the same in all four clips, except I turned off the various filters as indicated in the filename of the sound clip.

If you want to read more about this device, I've got stuff recorded in the other thread (http://www.tonelab.net/node/1407).

Thanks,

Well listening to the MP3's

Well listening to the MP3's its difficult to tell a big difference imo but I'm half deaf anyway :/ , I do think I heard more of a brightness with the 1st compared to 4th sample which is better if your going for a dark sound. you sure have a lot of stuff before the signal as well, you know most of us like KISS (not the group) straight to TL then the amp for quick jam sessions. While I'm at it here I will announce I may move to the Chicago area as I have been offered a supervisor position with Sanyo, BRRrrrrRRRrrrrRRrrrrrr

It might be your speakers

It might be your speakers and/or EQ settings, Monte. Are you using monitors or standard PC speakers? When I played the clips for my wife (because she is required by law to listen to my fretboard wankings upon request), she noticed a big difference between the first and fourth clips, which are the real "before/after comparison" I wanted y'all to hear. My speakers here are nothing too special (Roland MA-12C micro monitors through my Yamaha GO46 firewire interface), but they are good enough for basic recording work.

As for the signal path, all that stuff (minus the rack reverb) is mounted on a pedal board, which makes for easy transport. Mind you, my TLSE is still my grab-and-go option...the pedal board is my "tinkerer's rig." That's also the reason I've designed an all-in-one pedal that is designed to emulate aspects of this tone while having the DFD simplified and integrated as well as a final stage. My dance card is pretty full right now with work, guitar repairs (not mine, thank goodness) and business travel, but I expect to have the prototype of this all-in-one pedal done within Q1 of CY 2008.

I don't run the DFD as dark as the 4th sample, but for the sake of consistency, I kept the settings the same as the previous three clips. When combined, the Tone Filter setting and Notch Filter width both need to be opened up a little for my tastes. Clips 2 and 3 are pretty close-sounding, for sure. I can tell the difference (and could explain it from an audio perspective, if you're having trouble falling asleep), but they do sound similar. On my monitors, the difference in sound between Clips 1 and 4 is very close to the difference heard standing in the room with the amps (just a helluva lot quieter.)

This thing was designed for the Guitar->distortion stomp->amp crowd anyway. Anyone on this board can do better than a stock DS-1/dist+ and Champ/Spider II 30/etc, but the kids I work with often can't. With the DFD, the signal path becomes Guitar->DFD (with distortion stomp in DFD loop)->Amp. K.I.S.S. all the way, despite the more complex signal path in my mad scientist lab here. smile

Congrats on the new job. I myself anticipate changing jobs this fall (after 13 years as one of Bill's Borg...watch out, I may still try to assimilate you), but I won't be moving anywhere. I'm looking forward to the change of pace.

yeah... well Wood Dale is

yeah... well Wood Dale is where the new facility is... anyway
I was listening through my headphones and they can crank, I'm sure though if I turned my Fender PA150 on to listen I'd hear it more, but having to start 1 mp3 after another makes it a little harder to compare also.
