Okay.....I've had the amp for a couple of weeks now and here's what
I have discovered.....Fist gig I ran the TLSE in the "line" output mode. Boy was I unhappy with the tones...it sucked out loud...plus this was a loud room so I was able to kick it up a notch after midnight...the louder it got the thinner the tone got....I ran the TLSE at a lower volume and the amp at a higher volume to correct and nothing helped..it wasn't my best night...
Next night I ran the TLSE in the "amp' output mode...the tone was better but very dark...luckily the 2: 50 has a left & right presence control so I cranked them both up.....well by the end of the night the tone was close to being dialed in....the next gig was way better...TLSE in "amp" mode, I turned the presence off on the channel running into my Thiele 1x12 cab (lots 'o bottom end) and ran the presence almost all the way up on my openback 1x12 cab on top....using the volumes to blend the two I discovered a very nice tone indeed!! I will admit so far I do think this is better than running into input of my Nomad 45, seemed like to Fender/Vox amp tones are about the same, but the SLO patch I use for the heavy rock & roll stuff has opened up like nobody's business! It seems with the Nomad 45 the tone was being put through a funnel...now when I hit the SLO sim and pump up the gain it really takes off! Overall I'm very happy with the amp and I would recommend it to anyone who's looking to expand their horizons!

Tim, I am glad you are
Mon, 2008/01/07 - 5:14pm — LDTim,
I am glad you are warming up to the 50/50. I typically run my presence at around 3 but I am using different cabs then yours (2 homemade avatar 1x12 copies with celestion vintage 30s) . Also, I pretty much took the cab simulation out of most of my patches. Keep tweaking and you will find that tonal nirvana.

Tue, 2008/01/08 - 6:31am — timtonethanks....I stopped using the cab sims a while back...that's another TLSE secret to not sounding like you're using a "processor" I'm also using the 2: Fifty amp and it has a little different voicing so that might explain the presence settings. ANNNND, something I forgot to mention, this amp came with EL84's installed with the Groove Tubes Power Reducers to run the amp in class A mode.......

Over all I'm happy but it's like getting a new wife, very exciting but very frustrating at the same time...
P.S. my guitar was way bright due to the wood and the ebony fretboard & I was using a Fender Atomic hum @ the bridge...I picked up a Duncan TB11 which is designed to roll off some of the highs and add some substance to the tone...it's like a Van Halen tone...so far I'm very happy with the pickup...got a gig this Saturday night so I'll be able to test it out....Dr Crankenstein Rides Again!!

Tue, 2008/01/08 - 7:33am — ChicoBluezTT,
Glad to read that your new rig is working out! Running the TLSE thru a tube power amp is truly special.
I just added a RANE 5 band parametric EQ strictly to compensate rooms on the fly and not screw up my patches. I'm currently tweaking/testing patches and speakers in my cabs now that riding my Harley is out of the question.

Too bad...the weather here
Tue, 2008/01/08 - 8:25am — timtoneToo bad...the weather here is in the 80's...
I thought about an EQ but then I remembered that 12 space rack I used to lug around in the early 90's and I cringe!! (one peice leads to another, and another, and another)
Let me know if you have any info on the 200 watt EV's that Mesa used for so long...Most of their cabs come with the C90 Celestion, which is what I have now...Mesa assured me they are NOT built in China..they said all of their speakers are built in the UK...not sure if I am buying that one or not...I've heard the EV's give a true, uncolored tone with plenty of bottom end..I think these C90's are a bit mid-rangey, but I could be wrong.....Good luck with your winter projects!! Wed, 2008/01/09 - 2:14am — JvKHi, i am using also using a rig with the SE and a power amp in combination with a cab. Real good, till now i did not use an external EQ but i am seriously thinking about it for the same reasons Chico gave. I am able to colour my sound a little by using the "depth" and "prescence" adjustments on my VHT power amp. Sometimes i need some more so how is that RANE EQ?

Thu, 2008/01/10 - 7:04pm — firebrandI hear you on the "rack fridge of doom".
I used to run
- An H&K Attax preamp for clean tones
- A Mesa TriAxis for Rock
- A Boss GL-100 for Metal
- A Rackmounted Scholz Rockman
all into
- A preamp switcher
then to a
- Dual 15-band graphic EQ
- Effects rack "of-the-month"
- ADA MicroTube 200 power amp
and finally
- Marshall 4x10 or Peavey 2x12 Sheffield cab
Of course this was fronted by a Morely Bad Horsie or Vox Wah, a comp and a distortion/overdrive pedal.
WOW! I bet that was a killer

That reminded me of an article in Guitar Player where the columnist went to Joe Perry's house and snapped a pick of Joe in his guitar warehouse, where he has shelves upon shelves (ala wine cellar) of every guitar he owns all tagged as to what they are on the case.
JvK, Any EQ will not work.
Fri, 2008/01/11 - 7:54am — ChicoBluezJvK,
Any EQ will not work. You'll need a pro level Parametric or Graphic that will not color your tone when set flat or bypassed. Having said (typed) that, Rane's 5 band parametric EQ is a low to mid-level single channel, one space unit that is a welcome addition.
Parametric EQs are a more precise way of slicing and dicing your tone than a graphic one. I placed it before the TLSE. It's purpose (for me) is to make up for any tonal variations occured when playing live from room to room. You can control lows, low-mids, mids, high-mids, and highs. Also, you can set it at points between those frequencies to boost or cut. The power to split tonal hairs? As a rule of thumb, cutting is better than boosting. Boosting adds noise and distortion.
Last night, I was tweaking some patches (always) and dialed up some intresting tones with the parametric EQ. It's quite a powerful tone tool. Would be nice if one was built in.

I'm a parametric guy. Graphics I use for FOH and monitors. Although, that may change too. Boss makes killer stuff and I would classify the GE-5 as an entry to mid level unit.
Just think of being able to squeeze out all that tone between the sliders with a parametric. There is plenty tone hiding in them there sliders.
