Amp, Effects, Cabs in TonelabSE

kaal's picture

I created a list of the original Amps / Effects / Cabinets modelled in the TLSE and some other information I found useful. Thought I'd upload it if someone is interested. If you have some more information to fill up the "unknowns" please contact me.

There is an Excel sheet for those who want to play around with it and a pdf sheet for those who just want to read.

Kaal

I replaced the files with updated versions - thanks to your inputs!

This list is very hopeful. It makes clear and objetive a vision about the amps. Thanks a lot, kaal.

Great contribution, Kaal.

Great contribution, Kaal. This document is applicable to the "Patch Design Ideas". I will put a link from there to this thread.

As the others have said; excellent job and it is much appreciated.
I'm just beginning with modelers and multi-effects...I think I chose wisely on the TLSE. Thanks again!

Hi Kaal; I think the Chorus

Hi Kaal;
I think the Chorus effect is the Boss CE-1 chorus/vibrator floor pedal. It's known as the "Holy Grail" of chorus pedals. I still have one, and they were built in the mid 1970's. It was used a lot with a Fender Rhodes electric piano. Listen to early Steely Dan tunes. Vox's models the same tremelo and chorus effects. Its used on the "Diary" patch.
Let me know what you think. Again, thanks for all of your work on the spread sheet.
Regards;
Steve

Hi Steve, which TLSE Chorus

Hi Steve,

which TLSE Chorus do you mean? Vox says in the TLSE manual that the CL Chorus (the one used in the DIARY patch) was built into a guitar amp, and that the ST Chorus has a yellow case - the CE-1 is definitely not yellow, and I don't think it was also built into an amp or at least best-known for being built into an amp.
But - since the CE-1 is really famous and is modeled in most other modelers, I was quite sure that VOX also used it and found that it actually could be "hidden" in the MOD Delay (in the Modulation section, not the one in the delay section which is a Korg SDD3000). I searched a bit in www and found a circuit diagram of the CE-1 and - yes the CE-1 has a chorus/vibrato switch so this supported my theory. I was not able to find specs for the CE-1 'cause I'd like to check the maximum delay time it can do - if it is 400ms it is another indicator that the MOD DLY is based on the CE-1. Was there a spec sheet coming with the CE-1 and do you maybe still have it?

I was not able to "judge by sound" whether the MOD DLY could be the CE-1 since I don't own one. What do you think?

Regards
Kaal

I just checked my owners

I just checked my owners manual. I was referring to the Classic Chorus. I believe the amp was the Roland guitar amp. I believe at the time, there was only one amp that came out with chorus years ago. I remember because we were in awe of that idea. LOL, now look at what's going on. Thanks, Kaal for all your work.

I think you are right. It is

I think you are right. It is probably modeled after the Roland JC-120 chorus. I agree that the JC-120 probably has the most famous chorus ever built into an amp.
Just found on a german Roland Site the statement that
"the Boss CH-1 Super Chorus pedal provides the classical chorus sound Roland is famous for since introduction of the Jazz Chorus amps". So the CH-1 could be the pedal-version (the less famous one...).
Good enough for me, I will update the spreadsheet with the JC-120 soon.

I'm looking at the layout..

I'm looking at the layout.. it looks great, and it most likely is for those who now how to use this as a reference to set their TLSE, but I think for us new guys we need and example of what to do to get each amp, or even better would be "amp patches" another catagory for the downloads.

I'm pretty sure the Multi HD delay is a WEM copycat

kaal's picture

I don't think so - the WEM

I don't think so - the WEM copycat has got 6 heads, but the TLSE manual is talking about a 3-head echo. Hard to find out - currently trying to find out about the Echoplex EP-3, it's name suggests 3 heads...

kaal's picture

Hmm... changed my mind...

Hmm... changed my mind... seems that the Echoplex EP-3 is just the "solid state version" of earlier Echoplexes, one head probably...

How many head does the WEM / Watkins Copycat really have? Found hints that there are 3.

here is one on

here is one on ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/WEM-Watkins-Copicat-Super-IC-Tape-Echo-Copycat-Tap...

I think the POD manual description is wrong! It says that there are 3 heads, but then goes on to say that there are up to 4 delays ("ta" "ta" "ta" "ta").

A friend of mine used to have one and I am pretty sure that of the 6 heads you can see, only 4 are used for delays. The far right one is an erase head, the next is the recording head, the final 4 are delay playback.

It used to have a good sounding preamp in it too (which I suspect is part of the early Van Halen sound).

kaal's picture

Looks like there are tons of

Looks like there are tons of different copicat versions. Here is one with 5 heads in total: http://britamps.mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/watkins/copicat/copi9.html. So "3 heads" is actually correct (playback heads). BTW, the multi hd in the TLSE does 3 echoes in Mode 5 ("ta ta ta ta"), the first "ta" is always the original tone.

I will add the copicat to the next version of the spreadsheet, thanks a lot for the hint!

Off the wall, but I just

Off the wall, but I just realised where your "Don't Panic!" picture comes from. Nice. Very subtle.

BONES's picture

Incidently, the original

Incidently, the original Copycats could not do very long delays due to the positioning of the heads (close to the record head) - so the Tonelab delay setting of up to 2000ms is an anomaly.

But, Brian May modified the position of the heads on his Copycat so that they were on the opposite side of the tape loop - and this allowed a much longer delay.

Vox may have had this in mind when they set the delay time...or maybe they just gave us the extra flexibility?

Off the wall as well ... did
