Squeaky pedal blues

jon cardiacs's picture

I remember reading on harmony-central a couple of reviews commenting on a squeaky pedal when they got the voxse.
True to form, when I received mine it developed one, though intermitently, on exp 1.
When I took it down to London to get it looked at the bloke in the shop said "what squeak".
It had gone d'oh.
At home a few days later it was back with a vengance, so much so I couldn't realistically use it, except to turn an effect on or off, or add deley etc..
Me being the bloke I am, I took it apart to "fix it" myself. Sorted out the squeak, beautiful, it seems I am the squeak killing king! applause
But now I have completely shafted it 'cause the exp 1 now has no EXPRESSION1.
I must have done it during the process of, er, fixing it. beat up
I think the moral is obvious,
Luckily I live in Milton Keynes where Korg HQ are based so I could easily take it to them for the techies to check it out. I just hope in time for me gig on 24th Feb . praying .Otherwise I'm shafted.
Just remember - if you have a problem - think twice before doing it yourself!!
....now, where are my old fx pedals.... sad

Where was the squeaking

Where was the squeaking originating?

That metal axle looks prone to squeaking. I would guess some white lithium grease would work well there.

Oh good… It’s not just

Oh good... It's not just me... I've also started to notice intermittent squeaking in the EXP1 pedal. Not being the most mechanically inclined individual confused (I'm much more akin to operating things than I am fixing them), if the white lithium grease does the trick, if someone could let me know just where to apply it (without risking any issues with the TLSE's operating praying ), that would be totally awesome!

cheesey grin

Talk is for recognizing problems. Being part of the solution takes action...

First, I would put newspaper

First, I would put newspaper down on the surface I'm working on, because white lithium can get really messy.

I would approach the pedal from the top (toe) end. If you peer down between the pedal and the board, you can see the chrome axle the pedal rides on. Spray grease over most of that axle, especially where there is metal to metal contact. Then, work the pedal back and forth to get the grease worked in.

Then, repeat the process approaching from the bottom (heel) end of the pedal.

Continue this once daily until the squeak is gone. I would recommend such a treatment on a quarterly basis for squeak prevention.

I had this issue as well

I had this issue as well about an hour into mine. Take some WD 40 and get it flowing through the red adapter tube by squirting it into the trash or somthing first. You will only need a dab so holding your pedal with the back of the board upright and your pedal in the up position LIGHTLY apply a QUICK blast at the axle on both sides. Clean up any running lubricant so it does not get into the board through the opening that is there....this would not be good. You should be back in business and squeak free.

The good thing about using

The good thing about using white lithium grease is that it will not run, and will not damage internal electronics.

For most applications, I would choose white lithium grease over WD40 any day.

Excellent point Admin. I

Excellent point Admin. I just grabbed what I had on hand at the time. I wanted to spend my time with my new (albeit squeaky) TLSE v. fighting traffic to get to the local lube supplier. Possibly they should apply a spot of lube at the factory since this seems to be a somewhat common issue.

Here are some other

Here are some other opinions/solutions taken from a TLSE yahoo group
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

dwdyer:
WD40 will clean out any rust or corrosion, but it's basically kerosene,
and doesn't have much of a lubricant in it. It'll work for a little
while, but it will come back if it's a heavily used pedal, if you don't
follow up by cleaning it off and then lubricating it.

If it's a metal-on-metal hinge, I might use a little use 3-in-1 oil or
sewing machine oil, just a couple of drops. But probably it would be
better to use a grease, especially if it's plastic-on-metal. I'd use a
low-pressure, low-temperature grease instead -- a wee bit of vaseline
would work in pinch if there's no white lithium grease around. Moly
grease would work too, but molybdenum is not good for you.

Had that [problem] too when bought. Also the left one was too tight.
volume pedal too loose.

You can adjust that by loosening or tightening a screw on the pedal

I used a tiny litte bit of graphite dust used for lubeing locks.
It's a bit fiddly to apply, but it leaves a permanent patina on.
So far I have no squeaking any more.

Thanks guys u r the best.

There, is fixed

There, is fixed
The main squeaky came from the (heel) of the pedal, as soon as u spray the white lithium, work the pedal a little and it should be gone in a matter of seconds ( my experience at least) so i thank every one of u who put his savvy on this post, thanks a bunch.
