A new project ... or perhaps 'projects'!

Kieren's picture

Hi all

I thought you might want to see some pictures of my new project!

I’ll be travelling through London next Tuesday and I have arranged via the net (what would we do without it now???) to swap my ‘60’s Vox Phantom guitar case for a 1964 Vox Phantom 12 string body. You might recall that I already have a 1964 6 string Vox Phantom – but it has been badly treated by previous owners and most of the original hardware has gone.

So … my idea is to swap the neck and pickups from my 6 string onto the 12 string body (but string it up as a 6 string). Then all I will need to do is find the original tone and pick-up selector nobs and presto! – a great looking guitar. Though if the bug bites then I suppose I might actually be on the lookout for a 12 string Vox neck and the missing parts AND the replacement parts for my original 6 string! LOL!!!

A good 1964 Vox Phantom 6 string should look like this http://www.guitargonauts.com/pick-23.html and a good 1964 Vox Phantom 12 string should look like this http://www.brandoniguitars.co.uk/viewimage.asp?img=vox_phant_12_lg.jpg. Treat the above links as the “after” pictures and the attached photos of my actual guitars as the “before” pictures!

Chico - yep, they are single

Chico - yep, they are single coils. The 6 string sounds like a strat - but its certainly not as playable as a Strat.

I'm not sure about how the 12 string sounds. By the look of the pictures on the net they are stringed up in the classic 12 string way - eg 'thick string then the thin octave' - rather than the Rickenbacker guitars 'thin - thick' approach. I assume this will have an impact on the sound - less of the Rickenbacker 'chime' I would imagine.

I have used these Vox

I have used these Vox guitars before, and yes, the 6 is a strat type sound. It is not nearly as vesatile or rich though. More boxy.
The 12 is nice. It reminds me of a Hagstrom 12 from the same era. It has the brightness of a Ric, but the traditional thick.thin stringing does diminish the sound some.
