midi interface caused problems

nater's picture

Ok here's my problem...

I bought a midi interface (m-audio) for my computer (mac) and hooked it up to my tonelab se. I dumped my programs onto the computer. I monkied around with a couple of sounds and then saved it.
The next day i played it and the problems began... When I used my man in the box patch, with the talk mod set to expression 2, the pedal would act as a volume and talk pedal, so when you bring the pedal up you hear nothing. then i started to get worried. the next problem was when i would click on another program it would flash 2tap delay or something on the screen. and a delay would be added to my sound. and i was not in effect switching mode i was in program select mode.

to solve it i tried to reset my tonelab and dump my sounds back on it. when i dumped it, i got the same problems.
so i had to manually edit each program. i freaked out when all this happened because i had a gig that night, and i thought my tonelab died.

any ideas on why this happened and how i can fix it. i really want to use my computer to edit patches.

Hi Nater; I use my Mac G4

Hi Nater;
I use my Mac G4 with my Sound Editor often.
Couple of questions:
are you changing patches on the unit itself when hooked up the the Mac?
Or are you programming on the Mac first, with your Tonelab hooked up?
You need to be careful when you use the Editor. Clicking on any value will change the Tonelab as well.
I found out the hard way.
2nd thing to check: you may need to renstall the midi driver on your Mac, if you see that not all of the midi info is going thru.
Hope this helps!
Steve

also the patches you are

also the patches you are trying to dump may be corrupted, you should always back them up to different drives or partitions, or even a flash drive, SD or Compact flash or other similar devices.

So if I have the tonelab

So if I have the tonelab hooked up to my computer I can't use the tonelab to change programs or edit? What about using the expression pedals? I will try installing the drivers, it was plug and play so I did nothing.

I'm new to the tonelab and this site. I just gotta say, I love them both! I'm a gigging musician (3-6x/mo), and we play a big varitety of rock and the tonelab just keeps impressing me with its versitility. To be able to go from a U2 tone to a Alice in Chains tone with ease... man. It makes my job easier and more pleasurable.

Thanks for your help guys and I hope to be talking to more of you in the future.

It sounds to me as you said

It sounds to me as you said up above that it WAS working (or at least "talking") to the TL, you can use the TL to change programs and save them for back up as well, I have experienced "non-communication" problems as others have but it is usually user error, make sure you turn on the TL and the PC before starting the editor, and make sure you have the right version of the editor. also after starting the editor if its not communicating check the MIDI IN and OUT to make sure its using the appropriate cable. and as Steve said check for the newest drivers.
As for editing do make sure you write the changes you want BUT don't OVERWRITE the ones you want to keep. do a few "experimental" changes first after BACKING UP all of the patches. you can always get the originals back but not your modified patches.
How long have you had the TL ? Did you buy it new or used ?.

Ok. New delemma! Same

Ok. New delemma!
angry
Same delemma. I restored my tonelab last friday. Its worked since then. I have NOT hooked it up to my computer since i reset it and manually dialed in all tones. Now i'm having problems again where it a delay will turn itself on without me even touching the unit! and it will blink and change to a different delay sometimes too.

I bought my tonelab new from guitar center about 3 months ago. And being the smart working musician I am, I bought the two year protection plan.

I have a gig thursday, and as always, any help you guys can give will be appriciated.

I just fired up the tonelab,

I just fired up the tonelab, and all seems to be fine again.

Could the cold be affecting it? I thought i let it warm up enough yesterday... hmm. any thoughts?

Ok. I let the tonelab sit

Ok. I let the tonelab sit for a while and its back to picking delays for me. I'm sad. I've got a gig thursday, and my tonelab is sick. I'm going to bring it to an authorized vox service place.

well thats sad, a quick question, by chance do you think you may have bumped it ?, and also if you have some "air spray" maybe the button could used a dusting ?, if not then I'd send it in, if you bumped it something may be shorting out, what ever the case find out what they did to fix it if you can.

I'm pretty positive i didn't

I'm pretty positive i didn't bump it. and I also keep it away from speakers/magnets. I will try the can of air. it seems to behave for a while and then go haywire.
Thanks and wish me luck, i hope it will behave tomarrow night at my gig!

And on a separate note, i heard VOX won't honor the warranty if you use the tonelab live. Does anyone know if this is true, i read some warranty stuff and didn't see anything about it. Honestly it sounds ludicris to me.

Vox should honor the

Vox should honor the warranty. I play mine live every week, as so do others. Its the hassle of not having it for a while. I would take it in and get it serviced.
Before doing so, back up your settings.
Let us know how this turns out.
We hope its not a major fix.

I've been too busy to bring

I've been too busy to bring it in. It's been behaving mostly. After i turn it on, if i mess with the delay knob a little it seems to be fine after a few minutes. Maybe i can bring it in tomorrow, if I can tear myself away from it for a while. Gotta have it back before january, we're going into the studio! YAAY!
