Making patches with headphones?

hotraman's picture

I would like to start a thread to share my experiences about programming patches with headphones.
Not a good idea.

1st: its not what you will really hear.
I've lost count of how many times I've tweaked a patch, thought it sounded good, saved it, then played it thru my amp and was disappointed.
It will never, ever sound the same, don't do it.

2nd: People don't hear the same.
Some, like me, having hearing loss from years of playing loud with monitors blaring.

3rd: if you have to program with headphones, be prepared to tweak on the fly. The great thing about the Tonelab SE is that all the knobs are right in front of you. Just remember to save your adjustments.

4th: if you haven't done so, download the Sound Editor and start programming with it.
Its a lot easier to do, and you get to see a ton of features that are hard to find on the Tonelab. Plus, you get to see the actual settings of each patch.

5th: Have fun, mess around with the patches.
Its the only way to learn the power behind this unit.

Hope my rave helps!

Great tips, Steve. I have

Great tips, Steve. I have had the same experience with headphone tweaked patches sounding way different when connected to am amp or PA. I am sure that my using "cheap junk" headphones only exaggerates the issue. As for the hearing loss, my wife refers to that as "selective hearing." cheesey grin

Couldn't agree more with

Couldn't agree more with your comments, the only way to know if a patch is ok is to play it at gigging levels, and bear in mind that speakers behave differently when they are being 'worked'

I have found that less is probably more when creating a patch, so don't go overboard on any of the parameters, it's easy to overdo things like reverb, or gain, or even a patch level if you are working with headphones.

So much fun to play with though !

Also agree with selective hearing, I am told I also have it !
