guitar string preferences

Darren Tollakson's picture

Hello all.
I was wondering what you prefer for guitar strings..
since they effect tone.
I have used Daddarios .10s. and also ernie ball..but input would be a fun discussion.

I used to use Ernie's, the ball's seemed to have a bit of trouble staying on.
I used GHS fat XL9's "fatties" and a few other gauge's near that.
I have grown to like D'Addario EXL110 XL's, but I think what happens here is you end up getting the "deal's" as they come, I wait and get the 12 for 20 deal.... well now it may be 12 for 30 with the inflation rates blowing up.

I'm starting to get sick of my dean markley high gains! They sound and play great, but I've started breaking strings almost every week! I haven't used Big Bends Nut Sauce in a while.... need to start doing that again.

I buy my strings by the dozen sets. I prefer Ernie Ball 42/9. I like Dean Markley and Fender. ACTUALLY, if it's on sale...I'll buy 3 or 4 dozen sets. Lasts me about 2 to three months if I'm not too anal.

wow. lots of bending there Chico, I'm still trying to deplete my purchase of 12 sets over a year ago, but then I don't get to play near as much as you do and using nut sauce may help the breaking it's still recommended you change your strings every 2 to 3 weeks depending on your playing, if you play like I do I go 3 months on a set unless one breaks which is over the no excuse limit of leaving your strings on I think. things like washing your hands before play, wiping down or cleaning your ax after playing help keep the life of them going, also if you slide a lot you might try finger ease. I found it hard to track down some source of graphite similar to nut sauce to use instead.

I know a guy that changes

I know a guy that changes his strings after every gig. If he doesn't, he's more likely (in his experience) to break a string.

I use GHS boomer 10's and really haven't found a reason to switch. I'm curious to try out the Eric Johnson strings that are out there. I ususally change my strings once a month on average. If you don't buy in bulk, always ask for buy-one-get-one free!

I use D'Addario EXL110 XL's or GHS Boomer 10's on my Les Pauls. On my Strat I use D'Addario EXL120+: 9.5-11.5-16-24-34-44, and I replace the 11.5 with a 12. Why? It just feels right to me.

I use Ernie Ball 10s... at

I use Ernie Ball 10s... at least I used to. The importer has stopped bringing them in for the last couple of months, so I've been using D'addarios (10 gage too). I still like Ernie Balls better though, they feel more slick.
I change strings once a month normally, unless I do more than one gig in the same month. I try no to gig twice with the same set. Since I usually play out once a month, I can afford it.
I haven't broken a string in quite some time, I try to change them before it gets to that point.
Except on my acoustic. Since I don't gig with that one, strings stay on until they break. I just use to fool around, so i don't mind the shitty old strings tone. it's a cheap axe anyways. Current strings have been there for over six months, and I don't remember what brand they are.

GHS Boomers, light gauge

GHS Boomers, light gauge (10s) on my electrics, 9s on my son's Mikro. I tried the Gibson Special Alloy for Humbuckers on my guitars for a few sets, but found the sound to be virtually the same as the Boomers (and since the Boomers are about 2/3 the price of the Gibsons, went back to Boomers.)

Martin M1000 Marquis 80-20 Extra-Lights (10s) on my thin-body acoustic, D'Addario Phosphor Bronze 85-15 extra-lights on the kids 3/4-size acoustic.

My gauge varies by guitar so

My gauge varies by guitar so they all have a similar tension.
My PRS CE24 has Cleartone Lights (10s) made by everly.
I default to D'Addario 10s if I run out of Cleartone.

On the Jeff Beck strat it's Cleartone Extra lights (09s)

The Spirit Steinberger gets GHS Transtrem 10s. They are the best feeling double-ball strings I have found.

On my acoustic I currently use Elixir PolyWebs, Extra Light (11s). I like the "not quite classical string" feel. Before they came out it was Martin Marquis.

I used to be a big Ernie Ball fan, but they took "forever" to stretch out. I also was a BIG fan of Dean Markley Blue Steel, but when the packaging became "more environmentally friendly" the feel changed IMO.

D'Addario 11-49 Hey you guys were talking about Vinci They gave me sets(metal days)Heavy top light bottom...they were great, You could wang the crap out of them with a Floyd Rose and they would last longer than any thing else. I lost my connection with them. I saw there booth at NAMM but no one was at it. Where do you find them?

Fenders, D'Addarios,

Fenders, D'Addarios, Pyramids... I always have to do some mix and match. I use a 10-13-W18-22-26-36-46 assortment. Gotta have a wound G to stand up to the demands of hard playing. And besides, who needs to chase the wandering G around the tuner?

Speaking of G

Speaking of G strings....(get ur mind outta the gutter!)...and B strings, both of mine sound pretty dead, even with a new set of strings. I had a new nut installed this past year and I thought I got a bad couple of sets of stings. But each change results in the same "dead" tone from these two strings. Anyone experience and fix a scenario like this? If so, what did you do? I'm 300 miles from where I had it fixed (we moved this year), so it's not exactly easy to take it back for a quick fix.

I can change the height of the pickups themselves, but I can't adjust the pole heights themselves. I have a Schaller "set" bridge with no whammy. I'm thinking it's something to do with how the nut was filed. Maybe those slots aren't big enough or something?...

mself61's picture

so you might suspect the new nut maybe?, might try putting some graphitein the and run that gage string through it back and forth quite a few times. if the raising the pickups don't help. it may also be the bridge, has anybody seen the bridge ?.

As for the G... back

As for the G... back picking, hard open chords (especially crunchy open G major) and anything that needs exact intonation after some abuse from my playing has to be wound. Anyway, the increased mass and all that wound strings offer to a get a sustained, rich sound from that register are a must for me. Whenever I use an unwound G it has to be for super bendy, wailing leads that won't necessitate coming back to exact pitch. I do bow to those who can make their lighter weight strings and locking mechanisms work together for their own purposes. Also, I want to cite a great live example of playing hard and still sounding remarkably in tune in the days before any sort of lock down bridge or nut... Pete Townsend on the Who's "Live at Leeds' Wish I could do that.

I use Elixir strings 10-46

I use Elixir strings 10-46 on all electrics in my family, and switched to Elixirs for our old dreadnought as well recently. http://www.elixirstrings.com/ - makes "time management" easier since they really last longer without becoming dull or rusty - so I can play a bit more instead of changing strings. I believe they are a good alternative especially when not playing all the time.
