Modelers like the TLSE take some work to dial in.
Have you tried amp vs line setting?
What about turning off the amp/cab settings to find your tone?

Let me ask you a question or two, then maybe we can help you! First, what do you want the tonelab to do that it won't? I mean, what did you have in mind to use it for, exactly? Second, when you say you had "no luck" putting the TLSE into the effects loop, what does that mean? Does that mean you get no sound at all? Or, does that mean you don't like the way it sounds? How are you wiring into the effects loop? Are you plugging the guitar into the amp, then going out of the effects loop, into the TLSE, then back into the effects return? Or, are you plugging your guitar into the TLSE, and then taking the output of the TLSE into the effects return of the amp?

This Marshall 1959slp is a
Thu, 2007/09/20 - 5:55am — timtoneThis Marshall 1959slp is a re-issue amp right? These amps are designed for pre-amp distortion....even at low volume settings you are getting some mild distortion....that's the problem. The pre-amp is shaping the signal in a way that you don't want it to. I had a JCM 900 SL-X that did the same thing. I solved the problem by using the effects loop. Signal chain should be: guitar into TLSE into FX return jack. Don't loop the TLSE thru the FX loop, that throws you right back into the pre-amp, which you are trying to avoid. You can place a 1/4 plug into the send jack if you like. The master volume will control the output level of the amp. The tone controls on the front of the amp may or may not work this way. On the SL-X they worked so it allowed me to shape the tone of the amp. There are some amps out there that are just not designed to have a modern, amp modeling board like the TLSE plugged into it. You need an amp with a squeaky clean channel. You might be better off buying a used $100 Fender Blues Jr off eBay to run the TLSE thru. You will probably get better tone IMHO....... TT

Sat, 2007/09/22 - 11:11am — jdstormWhat I'm looking for is to use just basic effects like delay, reverb, wah. I've turned off the AMP/Cab options but still get a delay when delay is turned off. The only way I've gotten the TLSE to put sound out is by going through the input on the Marshall, and keeping the volume on the TLSE like at 1 or 2. But I will try some of the above mentioned options and repost when I find a good mix. When I tried to go through the FX loop like mentioned in the manual I got no sound at all. It sounds like I just need to do some experimenting. Thanks for all your help.

Mon, 2007/09/24 - 11:06am — jdstormI spent most of the day trying different connections to get the tlse to work with my 59 marshall other than going through the input of the marshall. I've tried every possible way to get the TLSE to go through the effects loop on the 1959slp and have not gotten any sound. If anybody else has any other ideas I would love to hear them. Thanks

Mon, 2007/09/24 - 6:44pm — jdstormI just purchased the AMP and had it modified. The guy who modified it for me told me the bypass should work.
Here is how I have attempted to use the loop.
1)Guitar to Input TLSE
2)Marshall Send-TLSE Return
3)Marshall Return-TLSE Send
I have never gotten any sound from this. Marshall's 1959slp manual is very vague about this option.
I don't know if I need to go with the guitar into the TLSE input or the input on the AMP.
If anybody has any ideas on a different chain to use the bypass. I have tried all chains mentioned above but got no sound. Thanks again!

1)Guitar to Input TLSE
2)Marshall Send-TLSE Return
3)Marshall Return-TLSE Send
The above won't work because you are sending your guitar level signal straight to the Marshall power stage (neither the Marshall preamp or TLSE is engaged)
Try this:
1) Guitar to input of Marshall
2) Marshall Send - TLSE Input
3) TLSE Output - Marshall Return

Thu, 2007/09/27 - 10:17pm — Will CTim, I'm curious what the bottom method (4 cable) does. I can't wrap my head around it and can't try it out cause my kid's sleeping right now. Does it put the Marshall as the TLSE's switchable effect and allow for bypass of the Marshall pre?
You are correct. This
Sat, 2007/09/29 - 7:30am — tbyrdYou are correct. This actually works better with the GT-8 because you can place the loop anywhere in the chain.
It helps to draw a block diagram with four blocks to follow the flow - in case others are wondering.
1) TLSE input stage
2) Marshall Pre-amp
3) TLSE amp modeling and effects processing
4) Marshall Power amp.
Basically what this does is allow you to use the TLSE front end (ex: compressor, etc.) into the preamp of the Marshall, and then that feeds back into the TLSE. If you don't want the Marshall preamp in the loop you just turn off the loop on the TSLE.
I haven't actually used this myself becuase I like to keep things simple.
