Unwanted distortion.

Greenie's picture

Hi all. Just wanted to know if there is a tube trimmer on the Tonelab desktop version. I seem to be getting a kind of overload distortion, like you can get when you overload the gain in on a mixers. When I use the AC30TB with VR gain to full, the unwanted distortion begins when the Gain is from 10 o'clock an upwards. Very anoying. I have tried all the harwarepossibilities, knobs etc. I have even changed tubes, 4 in all, with different sounds but still distorting. Help anyone?
Best from Greenie.

Most people set there trim

Most people set there trim output on the back of the unit to about 70%, if that dont help there are some other things you might try like cutting the VR gain,
oh shoot does the DT version have that trim pot ?

Yeah Greenie, I would say to

Yeah Greenie,
I would say to pull back the VR Gain. Or maybe you should choose a different amp model. This is a clean tone that you are trying to achieve right? I don't know.

By the way, welcome to the site.

The information on how to

The information on how to set the VR gain, and the kind of cable required to run the test can be found by clicking on "ToneLab SE service manual with schematics" at the bottom of the list to the left of this forum. The idea is to get the "numbers" to slow down or at least have as few digits as possible moving. If it set too high you will experience the noise you described.

What pickups have you got ?

What pickups have you got ? A big fat humbucker could mean you are clipping on the way in. Try a weak single coil because the TL factory input seems set way too hot in my opinion.

Hi again and thanks. I did

Hi again and thanks. I did the test with the cable stereo/mono, but all I got was 7F in the left window and 7F + som letters/numbers changing rapidly. Did I miss something?
I use both single and humbuckers by the way.

You need to find a small

You need to find a small screwdriver to turn the trim pot so the numbers s l o w d o w n.
It takes some time, but it does make a difference.

HI. I got a steady reading

HI. I got a steady reading of 7ffe. I would hav liked to try and reduse that a little? This is a Tonelab Desktop, not having the trimpot on the back. (there is a little hole at the bottom, wonder ehat it could be?)

That is the tube trim hole.

That is the tube trim hole. It takes an extremely small screwdriver to turn the trim pot. I have done that on mine and it does make a difference. My suggestion is to let the unit warm up for at least 15 minutes before adjusting. You also must do it for each tube you try. They are different.
