Best Amp for TLSE

noblesse oblige's picture

I am sure this has been discussed before but I am too lazy to search through all topics to find a thread.

I'm interested in your thoughts as to the best live electric guitar amp for the TLSE...I play a mix of Pearl Jam, U2, Coldplay type stuff and love the chimey ringing tones as well as chunky reverb with teeth. I went to guitar center yesterday to check some out and noticed that the Vox amps (especially the solid state ones) have a lot of the features of the TLSE and am wondering if a Vox amp would be redundant. Anyone have a killer rig with the TLSE they would be willing to share?

Hey man, Personally I prefer

Hey man, Personally I prefer a standard "tube" guitar amp, plugging into the guitar input on the clean channel. The reason for this is that I like to be able to control the tonal qualities post TLSE. I'm sort of picky about my tone (depending on which crappy bar I'm in) and I don't like trying to adjust my tone by bending down/over to scroll through the TLSE menu to change amp/effects settings. I would rather just reach around and trim the treble or add some mids right on the front of my amp. I'm not sold on the "one volume knob" power amp thing. My feelings are that the more knobs you have to adjust, the better your chances to dial in a workable tone, plus if you want a little more gain, all you have to do is crank up the gain on the amp a bit. I use a Mesa Nomad 45 1x12 plus a closed back 1x12 enclose. Both have the Mesa 90 watt Celestions and the extenion cabinet is the same width as the combo so it stacks very nicely and looks great at the gig. It's also relatively lightweight, compact, and loud as hell!! I would put it next to any Marshall 50 watt 4x12 half stack and the Mesa would blow it away hands down any day!! That's my honest opinion, TT

Atomic 50 Watter.
I've played my TLSE through a lot of rigs and the Atomic is the best of those.

Fender HR deluxe is a good choice because of two posts above. Allows preamp options as well as a transparent tone.

I would like to test a mesa boogie stiletto deuce which seems to be a very clean amp but in the other channel to have a very tight type crunch sound, I think it will be a great match to the tonelab

Another vote for the Atomic

Another vote for the Atomic 112-50.
Closed back, all tube and it can get loud!!!

How does the atomic fare

How does the atomic fare with high gain crunchy sounds? Im a little concerned about the single speaker setup since I normally want the bass part to punch through when muting, doesn't that muddle the sound all over when just having one speaker?

Sorry if this is a stupid concern, but I have never used an amp like that, guess I would love to try the atomic first....

Hey Joakim; That is not

Hey Joakim;
That is not stupid concern at all.
If anything, its a valid question.
I have heard some Mp3 clips of "high gain" or "crunchy aka
modern Marshall tones on the web.
Do a Google Search on a guy named Andy Z.
He is a Line 6 player, who owns an Atomic,
he posted some clips with his Rockmond rackmount gear.
When I've played my Marshall or Recto patches, they have sounded pretty good.
I bought my Atomic without ever hearing one "live"
I was so fed up with the lack of tone from my Vox TLSE, I was close to selling the whole thing.
The Atomic changed all that & at $599.00 US, it wasn't that much of a risk for me.
Alan bought an Atomic about a week ago.
He could offer up another perspective :0
Happy tone hunting!

I'm not a high gain player,

I'm not a high gain player, so I can't really give an opinion on the Atomic and high gain. What I can say is that the Atomic drives an extension cab very nicely, as well as it's internal speaker. I'm tending to use it with an extension cab most of the time. it just sounds "fuller" and "nicer".
I don't think the Atomic has a problem with bass response though, certainly not up to "loud church" volumes (I've not tried it louder yet). The cabinet is pretty huge for a 1 x 12, which will help with bass.

As Steve said, why not try finding out some opinions on the institute of noise forum (Andy Z's home site) at http://www.instituteofnoise.com/forum/default.asp . They are Line6 users but a lot are high gain players.

Greetings SayWhatEh...

I've gone through a myriad of amps looking for the tone I could get through my TLSE. Most amps color the sound based upon their individual tendencies. Based upon reviews on this web site and at Harmony Central, I purchased a Tech21 Power Engine 60 and love it! It is truly a transparent amp. I was about ready to sell my TLSE, but this amp is a perfect match with great tone (highs, mids, bass). I play live at church and with other musicians in small areas. I purchased the older PE60 off of ebay for under $250 (some like the older PE60 speaker over the Celestian). Check it out...

Be blessed!

We all have our likes and dislikes, but I peronally didn't like the PE60. It was not as transparent as I thought it would be. Sounded boxy to me. The Fender HR Deluxe sounds much better to my ears.

I use my ToneLabSE with an Crate V3112 connected to the "line-in" jack at the rear, bonus is that I get exact the same sound playing live as I get recording, thats a must for me ! I guess you can use almost any amp if it has a line-in, before I also used the clean channel but it's much harder to control so I skipped that option, and I'm pleased with my sound as it is.

I Use my TLSE with a Marshall 9200 2x100w amp (also known as the EL34 100/100) and 2 4x12 cabs, The amp produces a clean and noiseless tone so the TLSE produces all the sound and I think it sounds perfect!

In my personal humble

In my personal humble opinion. I truly love the sound I get with the Line6 Duoverb. If youre lucky to find one. They are very rare and what I really love about this amp, is the loudness and clarity in sound. The way I have my TLSE setup is, I plug the stereo outs of the TLSE into the Effects return loop of the Duoverb. That way, I am using only the power amp in the amp and with Dual 12" Celestions, you can really get awsome sounds. I really love this setup. If you do a search maybe on Craigslist, you might be able to find one. I really am so happy I bought this amp, its incredible how loud and clear this amp is, truly cuts through the mix and there are a lot of setup options.

Blessings,

Musikman
