I connected my ToneLab SE with an Edirol UM-1ex USB MIDI interface.
When I select the MIDI port under MIDI setup in ToneLab Soundeditor I get the following error:

Does anyone know what Im doing wrong??

Jeroen; Welcome to the

Jeroen;
Welcome to the site.
I have had the same problem at times.
if I remember, hook it the Midi from the Tonelab first ( also check to make sure your midi in/out is right) then open up the Sound Editor program.
If your midi driver is installed correctly, the Tonelab and computer will be talking.

Thank you. I checked the

Thank you.
I checked the cables several times but no result. If I only set the MIDI OUT Port in Soundeditor I don’t get the error but although the MIDI in and MIDI out lights on the UM-1ex are reacting when I change a setting on either the Soundeditor or SE there is no communication between the two.
I installed the MIDI driver (Vista and XP) from the UM-1ex on a Vista and Windows XP pc but I got the same errors.

We've had this many times

We've had this many times here.
if you got it to read midi out port it should read midi in as well, you must select the midi device you are using for both. also make sure you turn on your TLSE before you load the Editor.
check this thread and or maybe do a search for "MIDI IN"

I selected the Edirol UM-1ex

I selected the Edirol UM-1ex under MIDI IN port and MIDI OUT port. With Guitar Tracks Pro 3 I’ve got the same problem.
I thought maybe a defect the USB MIDI interface, so I exchanged the Edirol UM-1ex for an UM-2ex with 2 separate MIDI cables, but no difference, ahh. Again a checked the connection twice. I’m afraid the MIDI ports on the Tonelab are defect, I can’t think of another solution.

1. Get the latest and greatest drivers for you MIDI/USB device.

3. Make all the connections.
4. Turn on the Tonelab.
5. Turn on the computer.

I had trouble getting my

I had trouble getting my midi sport 2x2 to work so I went out and bought the UNO and it connected right up. but do what Firebrand suggested first,
1. Look in the divice manager and see if there are any conflicks.
2. if you see that the "device is working properly" without conflict then.
turn on your TLSE.
3. start the Editor, if you still get an error, go to the Midi tab and see if your device can be selected for IN and OUT. if it can set it.
4. close and restart the editor and if it still has an error make sure your midi device is still selected.
5. shut down the PC, with the TLSE still on, Restart the PC, restart the editor
6. if your still having problems it could be the TLSE, BUT I would try a KNOW to work Cable before turning in the TLSE to find that it wasn't the TLSE.

There is a MIDI test listed

There is a MIDI test listed in the service manual.
[down arrow]+[CHAIN]&[POWER ON]
I suspect it may require a cable connecting the in and out MIDI ports to do the test. Unfortunately there are no instructions in the service manual for how to do the test or what any readings mean.
My personal favorite solution would be to throw away the PC and get a Mac. wink Just kidding cheesey grin

CDUB may know how that MIDI

CDUB may know how that MIDI test might work, seems he always has an answer when it comes to those TLSE test, although you could always call or email tech support to find out how to test it. but I still have a feeling it has something to do with the process of how its being connected.

Did anyone already suggest

Did anyone already suggest to swap the MIDI connections?
(I repeatedly connected IN to IN and OUT to OUT and then wondered why it didnt work.)

The MIDIconnectors on your Edirol UM-1ex USB MIDI interface have "message flow" indicators. The "arrows" on the connector plugged into TLSE's MIDI IN should point to the TLSE, the "arrows" on the connector plugged into TLSE's MIDI OUT should point away from TLSE. Well, at least I believe that's how it is expected to be.

Also make sure the THRU switch is OFF.

Stick to Monte's suggested "power on sequence".
