Vox - Reliability!!

jon cardiacs's picture

I've been checking out websites, forums and user reviews recently and considering my own personal experience with the TLSE, Vox ain't the best when it comes to product reliability. The amps all seem to break down within days of getting them and my TLSE had to get fixed repeatedly. All the amps are based on what they designed 50 years ago so you would have thought they would have nailed it by now. Have I got too negative a picture of Vox.

P.S. All these different Tonelabs and they are all a compromise of each other - no improvements or upgrade like a Tonelab Pro could have been, just a side step each time. I think they just like taking the piss out of people.

Wow that feels better!

I have gone through two

I have gone through two power supplies and have had to restart the unit due to a switch not working... I'm still weary of wether it will fail again or not.
I always check it thoroughly before gigs, because I admit I don't trust the TL too much in the reliability department. It's still a great unit if you are careful with it though.

The power supply is particularly awful, and it sucks that it uses a "Korg only" plug, cause finding a replacement unit can be a pain in the ass.

I often get unexpected changes to the tuner too (it will not go into silent mode, but bypass the signal so you can still hear it while I'm tuning). Volume also seems inconsistant at times.

But it's still a very usable and great sounding device, so I keep it.

I've gone through 1 power

I've gone through 1 power supply, but after that... it's been smoooooooth sailing. Other than changing a tube, or adjusting a footswitch, you shouldn't have to many problems.

reliable they certainly

reliable they certainly are!! i dropped mine after playing at my church's youth group, (dropped about 3 feet) and i was so distressed that it would be damaged etc etc... took it home and plugged it in, and to my absolute delight it worked as per normal!!! these things are built like tanks!! smile am having issues with the 3 stomp button (sometimes wont select the channel or wont turn the delay off when i need it to... lol) but other than that its superb smile

The buttons not working all

The buttons not working all the time, seems to be the most common compliant.
Contact cleaner may be the solution.
My TLSE fell three feet off a djembe in my office about a year ago.
Powered up right away.
They are built like tanks!

there is a work around if

there is a work around if you go MIDI and use a foot controller to change channels I believe. at least LD has gotten his to change channels from his Zoom G9, I havent tried that with mine yet. this will do 2 things actually, not only change the patches from another pedal but save the life of the switches in the TLSE. but in all you do want those switches working.
