Tonelab SE as "effects only" from a parallel loop

narrly's picture

I have an SE that I have been using with a couple of Deville's in the power amp in for a few years. Love it.

I've got a gig coming up where i need more juice (80's metal cover thing) and I have access to a Deizel Herbert amp. The thing is freaking incredible.

I have been able to get some decent stuff by dis-abling the amp and cab stuff. It is still changing the tone some what though. I am running out of the parrallel loop (about 30%) of the Herbert into the SE.

any suggestions on over all level's of effects or the level on the output of the SE?

I mostly need chorus, delay and a little verb.

I would love some input and see if I can get the original tone of the Deizel and just using the SE for effects only out of the loop.

Thanks.

I used an SE for quite a while for just effects-only use in the series loop of a Zinky Blue Velvet. It worked pretty well.
Effects loops can be notoriously awkward to use. There seems to be no "industry standard" levels, impedances etc for them. All manufacturers of tube amps seem to produce slightly different circuits for them.

potential problems with using the TLSE in the Diesel's loop for effects are tone-suckage and clipping.
if you get significant ton-suckage (usually as a deterioration and dulling of the high frequencies), there's probably not a lot you can do. Either put up with it or not. The choice would be yours.
Some FX loops would produce too hot a level for a lot of effects units, including the TLSE. If you get any clipping of the signal in the TLSE due to this, you would need to turn down the % level going into the loop until clipping stopped.
As for output level of the TLSE, I would keep it at "unity". By that I mean that the level (and therefore volume) of the signal out of the TLSE is the same as the signal level without the TLSE in the signal path at all.

All in all, though, I expect you will just need a little time to fiddle and tweak until you get it right. Your ears will probably tell you when it's "right". I hope you get enough time to do so.

Thanks Alan! Very

Thanks Alan!
Very helpful.
After much tweakage I think my SE (with the patches i have been using for a while now) straight into my old VHT tube power amp and into my old 4x12.....sound WAY better than the Diezel.....I have been a beleiver....but man...now I really am....TLSE Rules!

Mike,
Cool. I would expect the VHT power amp into a good cab to sound great with the TLSE.
Out of interest, what speakers are you running in the 4x12 ?

You would ask that Alan....I am embarrassed to say I do not even know.... blushing

It is a cab I have had forever....built by Sound City. I know they are celestions if the guy I bought it from was telling the truth. I just dont know which ones. I have never even opened it up...it has always sounded great mono or in stereo. I dont really use it in stereo anymore. Mono is much punchier.....and the Fender's with the "power amp in" jacks are easier to haul around and hook up...and sound great for most gigs.

Got any tips for a particular kind of speaker with the SE through power amp set up?

Peace,
Mike
