Hey guys,
I know posting this on a board for the TLSE might evoke some biased opinions but i was wondering what the general consensus was regarding the TLSE vs Podxt. I've used both myself but am way to new to the TLSE to give it any justified review. For those that have used or have both what exactly about each modeller do you prefer over the other?

Mon, 2007/06/11 - 7:26pm — PetrucciisGodI've played both. The Pod sounds thin, weak, and flimsy and full of mud. With my hour and a half messing with it at guitar center, I maybe got 1 usable tone. Even just going through the presets, I think the TL sounds better.

, but maybe doubting that I will add I recently bought the Zoom G9.2tt to add to my rig by running both parallel. Although I really love the TLSE I find that it doesnt do Metal as good. but this combo has opened a whole new world for me. I havent played the Pod but you may be able to use it as I do the zoom.

Well, I don't own the PodXT.
Tue, 2007/06/12 - 6:46am — rjaneshekWell, I don't own the PodXT. I have played one that a friend has but I do own a Line 6 Vetta amp. The amps and effects and everything in the PodXT are all based on those in the Vetta. The Vetta can sound good and it has an amazing amount of versatility and options but it just always felt artificial to me. I do think the PodXT/Vetta rigs can do the heavier stuff quite well. Maybe better than the Tonelab. I think that's because heavier rock/metal relies much more on the preamp style distortion that one would find on a high gain master volume amp. This is not the kind of sound that I like or want. It's too fizzy and scooped and sterile for my tastes. The Tonelab really excels at getting a true natural power tube saturation like what you would hear in classic rock and blues music. It's got more soul to it. I also always felt that I got a better feel and more organic sound with the TL than with the Vetta. The Line 6 stuff is all DSP, there's no analogue to it until the signal is sent out to the speaker.
Another thing to mention is that I feel that with the Line 6 stuff it is much more difficult to find tones that really cut through in a band situation. You can do it but it is a frustrating process trying to tweak your tones that sounded good at home at low volumes when you get together with a band at full volume. You might find that your band mates don't have the patience to wait silent while you take several minutes to try to tweak your sound only to do it all over again after you realize that it's still not there. The Tonelab is much more forgiving and easier to dial in on the fly.
To make it a little easier, if you like the classic rock, blues and jazzy sounds or play on the cleaner side of things get the Tonelab. If you are into modern metal, thrash, nü-metal or whatever they are calling these days you should probably check out the Line 6 stuff. The Tonelab will do high gain, but it's just not the over the top high gain that you hear from all the kids these days who wear masks and spit blood.

Tue, 2007/06/12 - 8:15am — hotramanOne of my guitar playing buddies loves his POD XLT because he can download the metal patches.
But he likes the footswitch options of the Tonelab SE way better.
I owned a Flextone II with the pedal board. It was my 1st introduction into the world of guitar modelers. But I grew tired of the sterile sounds.
IMHO, the Tonelab Se offers a more of a "warmth" sound, due to the tube preamp. That's why I chose the Tonelab SE.
I may get the Rocktron Utopia G100, to get the high overdrive tones and A/B it out.

I've owned and or played Pod
Tue, 2007/06/12 - 3:05pm — tbyrdI've owned and or played Pod 2.0, Pod XT, Boss GT-3 and GT-8, Roland VG-88, Tonelab desktop and now Tonelab LE. The Tonelab is the closest to a real tube amp tone if that's what you like. Otherwise, all the others have great features and tones, just not as close to the real thing as the TL. However, even the tonelab lacks the speaker attack that no modeler can produce.

Tue, 2007/06/12 - 4:38pm — riffboy76Great comments guys. I own both and totally agree that I can see how one can prevail over another depending on its usage. With the Podxt I find it works best for me using it with other external effects ie delay and overdrives. So in that sense I can really compensate for some of the Podxt's shortcomings. On the otherhand i'm really enjoying the Tonelab for a stand alone setup. I think the sound and feel of the Tonelab is very close to playing a tube amp, something that i find the Podxt lacks (especially in some of the digital sounding overdrives IMO) I still have to spend alot more time with the Tonelab, tweaking settings to make a fair assessment but initial impressions are 2 thumbs up

Sun, 2007/06/24 - 1:09pm — firebrandI used to own a PODxt with all the model packs. Now I'm trying to get a ToneLab that works (or at least the one I bought to work right). For what little volume I get out of the ToneLab (desktop model at that) drips, well, tone. The PODxt is a metal head/ ex-Crate user's dream so long as you don't use any of the pitch shift effects and don't mind a weak sounding chorus. The synth, reverb and pedal models are top notch. I would also have to say the amp models aren't quite there, but the PODxt comes with a ton of tone shaping capabilities that no other desktop modeler has. I owned a Vetta for 16 months, and it was more rounded and fuller sounding than the PODxt. I owned the PODxt for 12 months. I bought a Digitech Genesis 3 that was just as good in every area except for cabinet models (which were constipated sounding) and the pitch/harmony/whammy effects (to which it kicks the PODxt's little bean all over the place).

Thu, 2007/07/26 - 12:49pm — kowalskiHello,
. I hope I made right decidion.
I am new here. I have POD XT Live which is for sale now. My new Tonelab LE comes in a week. I hope. I tried TL in a shop and I loved the tone. Soon later I decided to buy it. At least the change is always good
Speaking of effects, I did not like modulated delay of POD XT (memory man simulator). It is very important for me because I mostly play u2 stuff. And the onboard pedal (wah and volume) is mechanical very bad (IMO). In a short time playing in shop it seemed to me that modulated delay of TL is much better.
POD XT has millions of options, around 40-50 amp simulators, 20 cabinets .... Sometimes this is advantage but sometime is a disadvantage. I mean disadvantage becaouse sometimes I have tweaked for hours seeeking for the sound insetad of playing.
What i like with POD is that it has its own soundcard and it is very easy to connect PC with it (througt USB). It is very good for recording at home.
Soon, I will be able to tell you more about this topic, If you want.

Thu, 2007/07/26 - 4:51pm — memorexFor transistory-ultra-clean or metal distortion, the POD seemed better to me. For anything that sounds like a real amp, the TLSE blows it away. Both have OK effects, so it's all about what kind of music you play. I don't play a lot of metal and the TL's cleans are just fine for me. If I ever need a better metal distortion than I can already get from my TLSE, I'll get a good pedal and put it in the insert.

I got to play side by side with a POD XLT in a Atomic Reactor 112-50.
I own a Vox Tonelab SE, with a Atomic 112-50.
Both modelers sounded great.
But the POD Xlt was more modern in some of the patches.
But the Tonelab Se won hands down with:
better Vox, Fender and classic delays, reverbs and modulations.
His comment to me: "Don't ever sell your Tonelab SE"
I have the ability to channel switch A/B on a setting.
He doesn't or at least not to the level of the Vox.
Kowalski, Nice to see you
Sat, 2007/07/28 - 7:20pm — riffboy76Kowalski,
Nice to see you made it on the Tonelab board. Dont worry, you made a wise decision with the Tonelab. Like you, i've found myself lost in all the options the Podxt has to offer. In the end i'd rather have a unit that has less bells and whistles and sounds fantastic then a unit that is just average sounding with a tonne of effects. Since my acquisition of the Tonelab SE my Podxt has been getting dusty. I picked up a Atomic 1x12 18 watt and i'm in heaven.
When you get your Tonelab we'll have to share some U2 patches

I loved the "Streets"
Tue, 2007/08/07 - 2:53am — firebrandI loved the "Streets" setting on my Vetta. The Edge was definitely a pioneer in getting a great 1-guitar-band sound.
The biggest beef that killed the PODxt for me was my Jeff Beck Custom Strat. The Vetta + the strat = killer rig (just way too big for current circumstances). The strat + the PODxt = cheap frizzly bitey nasal tone. The input buffer on the PODxt is way different than the Vetta. The only guitar that sounded good with it was my Korean Steinberger Spirit.
I bought a Digitech Genesis 3 (blue desktop modeling unit) and with the exception of not liking all the cabinet models, all my guitars sound like, well, guitars again. It has the ability to mix 2 amp tones together and make a whole new amp you can save (up to 9 of them). Plus the clean tones, modulation and pitch effects are IMO better. The ya-ya and synth talks are somewhat silly to me but it's a small price to pay for a good unit like this.
Until people start to realize what a great unti the Genesis 3 is, you can buy 'em on eBay for less than $70 shipped. I was surprised that they go so cheap and that Digitech ever made something in this form factor until I found out they made [the real] Johnson amp and desktop modelers also.
That's not bad. But for me,
Tue, 2007/08/07 - 10:49am — hotramanThat's not bad.
But for me, its hard to keep up with all of the Digitech modeling gear. No doubt some of it is good.
But I've heard of some that were just horrible in their patches, when played side by side with the Tonelab SE.

Tue, 2007/08/07 - 6:04pm — firebrandThe ToneLab does have quite the name to live up to, and I believe it does so in spades. At this point in my life I would say that some of the overlooked Digitech items are the next best thing compared to Line 6 (and I was a hardcore Line 6 user, until I found the ToneLab).
Tone verses extreme
Sun, 2008/08/10 - 10:23pm — messiahtongueTone verses extreme versatility... I own The pod xt live and the Tonelab LE(just got it about 2 weeks ago). Sooo impressed with the sound. Granted, you have to create alot to get the options of the Line 6, but I'm a tweak freak so who cares.
Frankly I was never impressed w/ the pod's tone... or distortions, delays, etc. I heard so much about it, I had to get it. It does have an amazing array of sounds, artists, tweak-ability, etc, but the Vox (tonelab) destroys the pod when it comes to tone. HOWEVER... I'd like to throw in a suggestion.
Have any of you tried the newest Degitech model? Not quite the tone of the vox, but still nice, clear and round (that's what I call it). It also has a dizzying plethora of
of artists, stomps, amps and even a mic input (three prong... lo impedience??? I always get the two confussed) to use with a talk box! Yes, don't fake the wahs... actually talk! Do you feel like I do?!! It has software and a usb port and low and hi out puts. If you don't dig the digi. then go tone. Vox is know...has been known for tone for decades.
Hope this is helpful

I just got a Carvin 212
Mon, 2008/08/11 - 8:14am — ken374I just got a Carvin 212 belair vintage tube amp. Its not a metal amp but the tube setup is nice with 5 12ax7's and 4 El84 and the tonelab running in it. It screems Vanhalen all the way and good clean tones. I get the best of both worlds at a fair price. I still want a 2,000 head but cant do that now!!

Tue, 2008/08/12 - 2:59pm — firebrandken374,
nice double reference to VH there. What you needed to have was a $1,984 head that you could not do Right Now.
I just got my first look at the RP-500. A neat little pedal. But I was bummed by it having "clicky" foot switches where the ToneLab has smooth push button pedals. Still a guy in town who has owned every pedal one would want and still has a 6x12 wall that is literally covered by amps bought 2 of them. I would like to see the next Vox pedals go in opposite directions. One that is the smaller form-factor of the RP-350 with "simplified settings" and a monster with at least one pedal, a second expression pedal jack and COMPLETE tone shaping control (ex the ability to use 2 of whatever stomp boxes you want and a post-amp EQ).
