Atomic Amps

scu's picture

Has anyone had experience with Atomic amps (www.atomicamps.com) and the TLSE? I'd love to get some feedback on this amp. Thanks!

Lots of accolades from users

Lots of accolades from users on this site for the Atomic. Do a search on the site for "Atomic" and you see numerous threads e.g. http://www.tonelab.net/node/169

Also, shoot a message to hotraman, he is an avid user of the Atomic.

Personally, I use the Tech21 Power Engine 60. Works well with the TLSE...solid state. The Atomic of course is tube driven so you will likely get a different (better?) result if that is what ya need.

Cheers,
John

After playing my Tonelab

After playing my Tonelab thru a PA, with a powered Mackie 450, a Mesa Boogie amp & a Roland Kc 350 keyboard amp, I was going crazy.I was never really happy with the sounds of the Tonelab. All of the amp/cab simulations didn't really stand out like I thought they could. I play with a Motif ES 8, so I know the technology is out there. Also, my Tonelab SE sounded great in headphones, but never that great thru amplification.
That all changed after I bought a Atomic Reactor 112-50, sight unseen. There are enough sound clips and opinions about this amp on the web... but the idea of a all tube, enclosed amp designed for guitar modelers & rack mount gear got my attention. Tom King from Atomic was more than patient with my questions.
I bought one and am 100% content! No lying on this one!
They are about 8 weeks out on special order. I've heard a POD XLT and a GT8 thru an Atomic and both of my buddies were impressed...one even ordered a Atomic!
Even if I go back to stomp boxes, & rack mount effects, I'll still keep this amp. Its plenty loud and worth taking a good look, in my humble opinion!

That would be the way to go,

That would be the way to go, 2 are better than one, as long as they sound pretty close to each other.

I will admit, the TLSE

I will admit, the TLSE sounds mighty fine thru stereo amps! If you haven't tried it, give yourself a treat and crank it up. Just be sure to clear out the house first cause the walls be shakin!

Hi all

I also run my ToneLabSE's signal through 2 tube amps and it sounds nice for home playing volume so far. Soon I shall test it in a little trio which I shall rehearse with "drums/bass/and me :)" Then I tell you my opinion about it, but i guess I will be using line in plucks in both ams to avoid unwanted distortion from the amp's preamp's.

I've been gassing for a Tech21 PE for a while now.. but as hard as I looked, it is simply not imported to Argentina, completely non-existant here. sad

Those atomic amps seem like a good idea on paper, but they seem a bit overpriced for me. The whole template and stuff seems to be a bit of overkill. The PEs look much more tempting to me.

But neither of those amps exist here, so I wouldn't know.

I looked around and couldn't find a used 112-50.
They're hard to find.

Guille -- at the risk of asking a dumb question, maybe you could buy a Tech21PE60 on eBay and have it shipped? I see them often for $200-250 (bought mine there)...but not sure what the shipping would cost you. Just an idea!

Another aspect, and again it might be valid for Europe only wink
I bought a "demo" Atomic 112/18 from the european distributor G66 earlier this year. Unfortunately, the amp died a few weeks ago and I contacted G66 for a warranty repair. Here is my experience:

  • they react promptly. applause
  • No charge for shipping the defectice amp to G66 (international! - Austria - Germany) applause - I had other experiences with other firms before...
  • Since I already had recycled the original packaging of the amp, they even sent me a flightcase for packaging at no charge!!! applause applause
  • Total "solution time" was less than 4 weeks - including some eMailing when the issue occured first, shipping of flightcase to my home, shipping of amp to G66, repair (took longer as expected, I have been informed about the expected repair time), shipping the repaired amp back to me applause

Excellent customer service

Excellent customer service speaks more for a company than their actual product. Thanks for the info Kaal! mark (hp)

Customer service is huge for me!
Tom King is really involved in his company. Most of the smaller amp companies are like that. Genz Benz is another.
I played my guitars this week thru a powered Mackie 450. I was unable to set up my Atomic due to service circumstances.
I missed the tones that the amp adds. I love playing my guitars thru amps ( especially the Atomic). And I'm willing to back off the volume a little bit to hep with the FOH mix.

I used the original 18 (?)

I used the original 18 (?) Watt Atomic when it first came out, with a Pod and later with my Tonelab. It sounded great but had one major shortcoming - it did not have enough power to stay clean at higher stage volumes. I play a lot of jazz and R&B and when I need clean, I need clean. For rock styles it was fine.
I ended up selling it and buying a Mesa Boogie Satellite, which is an open back powered extension cabinet. It has plenty of power, but I am only 75% satisfied with the sound. It's got a significant bump in the upper mids that I can't really get rid of with the limited power of the Tonelab EQ.
Anyway, I have the new higher powered Atomic 1x12 on order, so I should be happy again soon.

The Atomics are great amps

The Atomics are great amps if you have a fairly stationary position while you play. I have found there coverage field to be quite narrow for my use.

I have decidedly purchased a Traynor Custom Special 50 instead. It uses a Celestion V30 Gold label speaker and has a power amp in. I use the TLSE in line mode so it does not subdue the highs. The Traynor also has the advantage of Presence and Resonance controls that still work when plugged into the Power Amp in jack. This circuit can be switched out of the signal as well. I have not been happier. And it has a preamp that is quite good ( smile ) should I ever have to send my TLSE in for repair.

That IS worth it! Waytogo!

That IS worth it! Waytogo! It's always a good move to buy something when you know you can always get out what you put into it.
