I was wondering if anyone has some good patches for the U2 - With or Without you sound?
I'm looking for the "feedback" sound that The Edge uses in the intro and the more crunchier tone that comes in around the 2nd chorus, i believe.
Thanx

Wed, 2007/04/11 - 2:06pm — Madmax25Well, since noone replied, I sat down and tried to figure it out for myself... (that'll teach me
)
The thing I cant figure out is the verses. The sound in the chorus is easy enough to accomplish with some of the U2 patches on this site (although finding a good tab of the song on the net proved to be harder than i thought
) But in the verses, Edge utilizes some very long sustaining notes that I for the life of me can't get out of the tonelab. I have tried every setting on the compressor to no effect, tried both humbuckers and singlecoils, I just can't get those long sustaining notes that IMO really defines the sound of that song.
Anyone have any bright ideas?
hello , i found a site
Wed, 2007/04/11 - 2:12pm — Darren Tollaksonhello , i found a site called tonelab vibemaker .com and if you log on and go to the files section there is a current file to download that shows all current patches he could find and there are some u2 ones there..good luck

I suspect that for the really long sustaining notes, the Edge is using an ebow (google it).

Hamfist, interesting reading
Thu, 2007/04/12 - 7:20am — humblepieHamfist, interesting reading about the ebow. Their site even lists what songs it is used on. U2 uses it on Unforgettable Fire and With or Without You (Live). Quite a list of users... mark (hp)

Thu, 2007/04/12 - 7:33am — mself61I'm wondering if they somehow modified the EBOW cause mine seems week, of coarse I haven't tried it on my viper yet though.

Hey mself61, If I recall
Thu, 2007/05/03 - 12:55am — BharatHey mself61,
If I recall correctly, the original E-bow has only got an on-off switch.
Maybe you should consider buying an E-bow Plus.
The E-bow plus has got an additional mode: the harmonic switch gives you a powerful infinite sustain and can create rich harmonics for incredible sounds.
I have got mine since 1999 and it' still up and running.

The most convincing way to play the 'With or Without You' intro, is using an E-bow -see my post to Mself 61- and combine it with a CLEAN SOUND with some Delay (don't overdo this, otherwise the E-bow will cut like a knife through your listener's ears).
If you're not planning on using an E-bow, maybe you can try to simulate the sound by combining a volume pedal (to zoom in and thus masking your picking sounds), a Hi-gain Distortion type, and finally a Delay with high feedback settings (somewhere between 60 and 70 percent).
This should do the trick for you. If not, you should really consider the use of an E-bow.

Thu, 2007/05/03 - 7:02am — mself61well the 80 bucks for an ebow and being as "weak" as it was was really a rip off, an ebow plus ? never seen one yet !. I dont think there is to much "technoligy" in an ebow, to sell something that is a "rave" with guitar players and be a peice of carp when you try it out tells me they just want your money, "f" getting a "plus" my 80 dollar one SHOULD work shouldn't it?. like I said though I hadnt tried it on my vipor but for 80 bucks even on my "custom squire" I shouldnt have to hold the thing in place for 5 seconds before the string barely vibrates and God forbid you move your hand and lose the signal. so it sits quietly in its velvet pouch, ( you know the one the give you just because they know your gonna want to keep it safe from dust) and dreams of a day it will be used. hell I'd rather use a violin bow

This is definitely not how
Thu, 2007/05/03 - 12:11pm — kaalThis is definitely not how my E-Bow (Plus) behaves.
It takes a while until you get it going with the EBow. It took me several hours to get familiar just with the position where to put it relative to the pickup to get immediate and repeatable sounds. It is really a matter of just a millimeter that makes a difference. The right position also changes depending on the pickup mode (serial/parallel/tapcoil), and I had to tweak my volume settings quite a lot.
In the "harmonics" mode, I felt the position was not as important, but I never managed to control the harmonics, so it always ended in a wild squeal of whatever harmonic the E-Bow (and not ME) decided to be the one to go for...
Did you try a fresh 9V-block? I did see some decrease in responsiveness with a weaker battery.
80$ is not a bargain, but I do not regard it a rip-off as well.

Thu, 2007/05/03 - 9:22pm — mself61yeah I did try a brand new enrgizer bunny in that sucker... and it waork "slightly" better but still just not what I expected, I dont see or hear to many players using them really, so I just figure its one of those "check this out" deals. I'm gonna tear it apart see what makes it tick and build a better one

that may be a great effect
Sat, 2007/05/05 - 11:43am — mself61that may be a great effect if you want to attach it to your guitar. do you use that yourself Kaal ?, although I see its quite pricey. and the Plus system has no link to it.

No, I dont use a sustainiac.
Fri, 2007/05/11 - 2:12pm — kaalNo, I dont use a sustainiac. When reading the thread I just remembered that I read in a paper book that some guitars have some sustainer built in (Hamer Chapparal) and googled the URL.
I use an eBow Plus from time to time as I mentioned and love it when I'm in the right mood. As always more time to practice would help...too many hobbies for the time available.

Fri, 2007/05/11 - 6:03pm — mself61well I just looked at the box it came in cause I use it to hold my rechargable batteries and it says "PlusEBow" so I must assume its a Plus, maybe I need to hook it up to a car battery

Well, mself, if your eBow has a 2 position Off/On switch or none at all then it's an old style EBow. If it has a 3 position switch with Off being in the middle, it's a EBowPlus. There is a small "bar" printed below the switch - the side where the bar is thicker (UP-position when playing it on a right-handed guitar) is the "normal" position, the side with the "thinner" bar (DOWN) is the "harmonic" mode.
Don't tell me you didn't get that, chap...
I think you can also tell from the color:
* Chrome plated plastic - very old, historic, first generation EBow from the 70ies
* Black with red Logo - 2nd generation
* Black with white Logo - 3rd generation
* Anthracite, uncolored Logo - 4th (current) generation = EbowPlus
need to play with it right now, writing about it made me kind of horny

If you want more sustain,
Sun, 2008/07/06 - 5:28pm — CoupsterIf you want more sustain, try turning off the noise gate. You really don't need it anyway. I turned mine off for more sustain, and it worked for me. I'm not sure if it will give you what you're looking for, but here is how to do it:
Press the CAB button while holding down the AMP button, and adjust the NR SENS (value knob 4) appropriately. Higher values of noise reduction (0.2, 0.4, ... 10.0) will produce a correspondingly greater effect. With a setting of “OFF” there will be no noise reduction
