How to Test and Save New Patches

Admin's picture

You've found the right patch

Now, download it by clicking on the link. Any browser should ask you if you want to save the file, or run it from it's location. For this tutorial, we'll click "Save file." A dialogue will appear asking you where you want to save the file to. The easiest place is your desktop. Where ever you save it, make sure you remember it so you don't have to hunt for it later. Now we're done with that step. On to loading the patch and trying it out.

Note: For this to work, you need to have the ToneLab SoundEditor set up on your computer. If you're unsure how to do this, you can read our article "How to Set Up Your ToneLab SE SoundEditor (PC)".

Open the SoundEditor

Open the ToneLab SoundEditor. You'll see something that looks basically like this:

Load the new patch

Click the "File" menu, and select "Open":

Navigate to the new patch with the explorer window that comes up. Mine is on my desktop:

Select the TLP file and click "Open"

You will see that it has loaded:

You may have to click away, then click on the name of the patch in the menu on the right side to get it to fully load. At this point, your ToneLab should also have loaded the preset. You can now test it out, and see how it sounds with your rig. You can also tweak the sound to match your playing volume, the tone of your guitar, etc..

Saving the Patch to your ToneLab

After you have fine tuned your patch, you're ready to write it to your ToneLab so you can take that sound with you on the road.

This is really pretty simple. Just click the button at the bottom that says "Update program":

Then choose an appropriate bank and patch number to store this new preset on:

Remember, this will over-write whatever patch is currently in that space, so be careful not to replace a patch you already like without backing up your pretests.

All done. That wasn't so bad was it?

Now it's time to learn how to export your patches and upload for everyone to enjoy. For that, visit our next article at: "How to Export Your Patches."
