What you will need:
- Your TonLabSE
- A PC
- An open MIDI input and output - Not sure if your computer has MIDI? Find out here.
- Two
MIDI Cables
- The ToneLab SE SoundEditor
- For extra detail, the SoundEditor manual can be quite handy.
Connect Your ToneLab:
Using the two MIDI cables, connect the MIDI In on your ToneLab to the MIDI Out on your computer, and connect the MIDI Out on your ToneLab to the MIDI In on your computer.
Install the SoundEditor:
Download the ToneLab SE SoundEditor.
Unzip the downloaded file, and run "Setup.exe." It should place a shortcut Icon on your desktop that looks like this:
. Give that icon a double click.
Run SoundEditor for the first time:
When you open it for the first time, you should see this:

Notice that it says "Dump receive not available." That means you need to tell it what MIDI ports your ToneLab is connected to.
Click "Ok" on the message that comes up.
That will bring us to this screen:

Setup:
Click on the "MIDI" menu.

Then click "MIDI Setup"
That will take us here:

Select your MIDI ports from the drop down boxes as such:

Once you have selected your ports, click "Make Default"
Then it will show you this:

Once it's done loading, you should see something like this:

You're done, it's time to play
This displays what patches are currently on your ToneLab. Pretty cool. At this point, if you change a setting on your ToneLab, the corresponding setting will change on the computer screen. If you switch patches, the computer will jump to that patch too. If you have modified the patch you are currently on, then switch patches, the SoundEditor will ask you if you want to save the current patch before jumping to the new one (a really great safety device - keeps you from losing all the fine tuning you just did). Be aware that if you don't save, the patch will revert to the state it was before you edited it.
Likewise, if you change something using the computer, your ToneLab will change in real time. This is a great way to test out different patches, which is the subject of the next tutorial: "How to Test and Save New Patches."
