So you want to replace your tube?

Well, you're not the only one. Many have replaced their stock tube for something a little different, most with positive outcomes. While this article doesn't offer any advice on what tube to use, it will give a solid understanding of how to go about changing it.

Tools Needed:

  • One 3mm allen wrench... That's it! Only one tool!

Remove the cover

Use your allen wrench to loosen the bolts that hold the plastic cover in place. You can get more torque if you use the allen wrench longways (like a wrench).

But you can get more speed if you use it height-wise (like a screwdriver).

Once you have loosened all the bolts, remove the cover.

Loosen the tube

Using your finger, wiggle the tube slightly from side to side to get it loose enough to pull out.

Pull the tube out

Place the short side of your allen wrench at the base of the tube (between the glass and the white plastic piece). Hold the top of the tube steady with your finger. Using the wrench as a lever, apply gentle pressure to push the tube away from the socket.

Place the wrench under the tube and pull up, using your finger to keep it steady. Continue alternating between pulling up gently, and levering the tube out of the base until the pins come free from the socket.

Place your wrench directly under the gravitational center of the tube (so you can balance it on the wrench). Then balancing it with your finger, pull the tube out through the hole in your ToneLab.

An empty socket

Voila! An empty socket ready for a new tube! Notice that the space between the front two pin-holes is wider than the rest. The socket is keyed to the front. That will be important later.

A new tube

Perfect, a brand new tube. Notice that two pins of the tube are set wider apart than the rest. That will be the front (facing up) of the tube.

Install the new tube

Gently place the new tube into the slot in your ToneLab. You can let it rest on the bottom for now.

Lift the tube again with your wrench in much the same way you lifted it earlier. Spin the tube so that the key (wide space between pins) is facing you. Insert the tube into the socket and slide the allen wrench up to the top of the tube.

Using the wrench as a lever again, apply a very gentle and slow pressure to the top of the tube until it glides fully into place in the socket. The glass should make full contact with the white plastic base.

Replace the cover

Put the cover back on exactly the way it came off.

Plug it in and play

Power it up, select your favorite patch and hear the glorious sound of a quality tube in a quality machine.

Pat your self on the back for a job well done
